⏰ 14 DAYS TO GO β€” First MTD for Income Tax deadline

If you're a sole trader or landlord with qualifying income over Β£50,000, your first quarterly update under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is due on 7 August 2026.

That update covers the period 6 April – 5 July 2026, and it must be submitted through MTD-compatible software. Spreadsheets alone won't cut it unless they're bridged.

What you need in place:
βœ… Digital records of income and expenses for the quarter
βœ… Compatible software (or bridging software)
βœ… Your agent authorisation sorted, if we're filing on your behalf

Not sure whether this applies to you, or whether your records are ready? Get in touch β€” it's far easier to fix now than in the first week of August.

πŸš— Big news for sole traders: Mileage allowance jumps to 55p per mile!

For the first time in 15 years, HMRC has increased the Approved Mileage Allowance Payment rate β€” and it's great news for anyone using their own car or van for business.

βœ… First 10,000 business miles: up from 45p to 55p per mile
βœ… Miles after 10,000: stays at 25p per mile
βœ… Backdated to 6th April 2026 β€” so it covers the whole 2026/27 tax year

What this means for you:
If you're a sole trader using simplified expenses, this could mean a bigger deduction against your taxable profits β€” and a lower tax bill. For example, 8,000 business miles now works out at Β£4,400 tax-free, instead of Β£3,600 under the old rate.

πŸ“‹ Keep your mileage log up to date from 6 April 2026 and make sure you're applying the new rate on your 2026/27 Self Assessment.

Not sure how this affects your accounts? Get in touch with the team at Mills & Burns β€” we'll make sure you're claiming everything you're entitled to.

πŸ“Š The first quarter of Making Tax Digital is here!
If you're a sole trader or landlord with qualifying income over Β£50,000, you're now in the new world of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. πŸ—“οΈ
Your very first quarterly update β€” covering 6 April to 5 July 2026 β€” is due to HMRC by 7 August 2026.

A few things to keep in mind:
βœ… It's not a full tax return β€” just a digital summary of your income and expenses for the quarter
βœ… Your records need to be kept in MTD-compatible software (Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and others)
βœ… You'll submit four quarterly updates plus a Final Declaration (due 31 January 2028)
Not signed up yet, or unsure whether MTD applies to you? Now's the time to get organised β€” don't let it become a summer scramble. β˜€οΈ

πŸ“’ Important Update for Limited Companies & LLPs!

The government has confirmed it will press ahead with accounts filing reforms at Companies House β€” but with a key delay and a privacy option that many businesses will welcome.

πŸ—“οΈ New implementation date: April 2028 (pushed back from April 2027)

Here's what's changing:

βœ… Small companies and micro-entities will now be required to file a Profit & Loss Account with Companies House β€” but you'll have the option to opt out of it appearing on the public register.

βœ… All accounts must be filed via commercial software (no more paper or web-based filing).

βœ… Abridged accounts will no longer be an option.

βœ… A strengthened eligibility statement will be required for companies claiming an audit exemption.

βœ… All parts of annual accounts must be filed together.

βœ… The number of times a company can shorten its accounting reference period will be reduced.

Importantly, where companies opt out of public P&L publication, Companies House, HMRC and law enforcement will still have access to those figures.

With the April 2028 start date, businesses will have one full accounting year plus 9 months to prepare β€” that's 21 months in total.

What does this mean for you? If you'd like to discuss how these changes may affect your company's filing requirements, get in touch with us today. πŸ‘‡
