HMRC has asked for bank statements or detailed financial records. Do you have to provide everything requested?

HMRC has powers to request information when checking a tax position. However, an information request should be relevant and reasonably required for the purpose of that check.

In this video, Ahmad Tirmizey of Reflex Accounting explains:

- Why HMRC may request financial information
- When private bank statements may be relevant
- Why you should understand the scope of an HMRC enquiry
- The importance of keeping clear business and tax records
- Why you should not ignore a formal HMRC notice
- When it may be sensible to seek professional advice before responding

The right approach is not to refuse a valid request or automatically send every document without question. First, understand what HMRC is reviewing, what information has been requested and whether the request relates to your tax position.

If you have received an HMRC enquiry, information notice or request for records, Reflex Accounting can help you review the request, prepare supporting information and manage correspondence with HMRC.

Does your UK company sit within a larger UK or international group?

Group membership can affect whether a statutory audit is required, even where the UK company is small on its own. It can also bring tighter deadlines, intercompany reconciliation issues and reporting requirements from a parent company or group auditor.

At Reflex Accounting, we provide specialist statutory audits for group members, including UK subsidiaries of overseas parents, UK group companies and component companies reporting to group auditors.

We help you understand your audit position, coordinate with group finance teams and complete the process with clear communication and senior audit oversight.

🚨 Your video went viral. But is your tax bill about to go viral too? 👀💸

Imagine this…

📈 Your followers double overnight.
🤝 Brands start offering paid collaborations.
💰 Affiliate commissions start rolling in.
🎥 TikTok, Instagram and YouTube begin generating serious income.

Everything is growing. But have you thought about the tax implications?

Here's what every UK content creator needs to know:

1️⃣ More income could mean more tax.
Brand deals, platform payments and affiliate commissions can all contribute to your taxable business profits.

2️⃣ Keep an eye on the VAT threshold.
If your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 over a rolling 12-month period, you may need to register for VAT. Different income streams and overseas payments can complicate the position.

3️⃣ Don't forget your business expenses.
Cameras, editing software, equipment and certain other business costs may be deductible, depending on how they're used.

4️⃣ Put money aside for tax.
Your earnings aren't necessarily your take-home pay. Income Tax and National Insurance may need to be considered.

5️⃣ Review your business structure.
As your income grows, it may be worth reviewing whether operating as a sole trader or limited company is more appropriate.

✨ Going viral is exciting. An unexpected tax bill isn't.

You bought a £2,000 camera for your content. Can you claim it against tax? 📸

What about your iPhone, outfits, flights or even the coffee you bought while filming?

One of the biggest misconceptions among content creators is that if you use something for content, it automatically becomes a business expense.

Unfortunately, HMRC doesn't see it that way.

A few examples:

📸 Camera: Business equipment may qualify for tax relief.
📱 iPhone: Business use matters, especially when you use it personally too.
👗 Clothing: Ordinary outfits are generally not deductible, even if you wear them exclusively for content.
✈️ Travel: Genuine business travel can qualify, but a holiday doesn't automatically become deductible because you filmed it.
💻 Editing software: Business subscriptions can usually be claimed.
🍽️ Meals: Filming your lunch doesn't automatically make it a business expense.
🏠 Home office: You may be able to claim a proportion of eligible household costs.

The important question isn't simply what you bought. Its why you bought it and how you use it.

Swipe through the carousel for seven expenses worth understanding.

💬 Which expense have you always been unsure about claiming?
