📩 Received a "Correction of Obvious Errors" Letter from HMRC?

If you've recently received a letter from HMRC stating that they've corrected your tax return due to an "obvious error or omission", don't ignore it.

These letters are becoming increasingly common, particularly for individuals working under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), where HMRC may challenge CIS deductions, income figures, or claims made on a tax return.

It's important to check the amendment carefully. HMRC can get things wrong, and you may have the right to challenge the correction if you believe it is incorrect.

If you've received one of these letters and aren't sure how to respond, contact us for advice before taking any action.

If you're signed up for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, your first quarterly submission deadline is fast approaching.

⏰ Deadline: 7 August

This submission covers the period from 6 April to 5 July and requires a summary of your business and/or property income and expenses.

Remember, quarterly updates are not tax returns, but they must be submitted using compatible MTD software and accurate digital records.

If you're unsure what needs to be reported, haven't started keeping digital records, or need help with your submission, we're here to help.

📄 Have You Checked Your P60 Yet?

By now, most employees should have received their P60 for the tax year ended 5 April 2026.

Your P60 is an important document that summarises your total pay and tax deductions for the year. It's often needed for mortgage applications, loan applications, tax returns and proof of income.

We recommend checking your P60 carefully to ensure:

✅ Your personal details are correct
✅ Your total pay matches your records
✅ The tax deducted appears accurate

If something doesn't look right, don't ignore it. Errors can affect your tax position and future applications.

Not sure what the figures mean or concerned something may be incorrect? Get in touch with us and we'll be happy to help.

🚗 HMRC Mileage Rate Increased to 55p Per Mile

For the first time in over 15 years, HMRC has increased the approved mileage rate for cars and vans from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles travelled each tax year.

Announced in May 2026 and backdated to 6 April 2026, the change means employees, directors and self-employed individuals can claim greater tax-free mileage relief when using their own vehicles for business journeys.

The increase reflects rising fuel, insurance and vehicle running costs, and may require businesses to review their mileage reimbursement policies and payroll processes.

Remember: business mileage includes travel to clients, meetings and temporary work locations, but not ordinary commuting between home and your permanent workplace.

The Lower Earnings Limit (LEL) has increased:

🔺 £542/month (2025/26)
➡️ £559/month (2026/27)

💡 Why this matters:
You still don’t pay National Insurance at this level…
…but you continue to earn entitlement to State Pension and other benefits.

⚠️ The change means:
If your salary stays the at £542/month , you could accidentally fall below the new LEL and lose those benefit credits.

🎯 Action for directors:
Review your salary for 2026/27 to ensure it stays at or above £559/month.
