🚨 Why it’s important to check your tax code on your payslip 🚨

Most people check their salary every month…

But very few people check the tax code on their payslip.

Your tax code tells your employer how much tax to deduct from your pay through PAYE. If it’s incorrect, you could be overpaying tax without realising — or underpaying and receiving an unexpected letter from HMRC later.

Here are some tax codes worth checking on your payslip:

• 1257L – The standard UK tax code (includes the £12,570 personal allowance)
• 0T – No personal allowance applied
• BR – All income taxed at 20%
• D0 – All income taxed at 40%
• K codes – Extra tax is being collected through PAYE

Codes like 0T or BR often appear when you start a new job, have multiple jobs, or HMRC doesn’t yet have your full income details.

If something doesn’t look right, it’s worth checking your HMRC app or Personal Tax Account.

Correcting a tax code could mean:
✔ paying the correct tax
✔ avoiding a surprise tax bill
✔ or even receiving a tax refund.

Save this post so you know what to look for next time you check your payslip.
