Confused by the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)? Here is the quick breakdown. 🛠️📋

CIS acts like PAYE for the self-employed construction world, where contractors deduct tax at source from a subcontractor's invoice and pass it straight to HMRC.

🛠️ For Subcontractors
The 30% Deduction: If you aren't registered for CIS, contractors must deduct a massive 30% from your pay. Registering drops this to the standard 20% rate.

The Materials Exemption: Deductions are only taken from the labour portion of your invoice. Materials are paid in full.

The Homeowner Exception: CIS does not apply when working directly for a private domestic homeowner.

🏗️ For Contractors
Who Must Register? Anyone paying subbies for construction work, OR any business spending over £3 million on construction in a rolling 12-month period.

Your Obligations: You must verify your subcontractors with HMRC, deduct the correct tax rate, and submit monthly CIS returns.
