In his latest blog, Path’s Founder & Chair, David Macdonald, considers how inflationary pressures and recent fiscal policy has made inheritance tax (IHT) an issue for many in the UK.

For decades, UK inheritance tax sat in the background of financial planning for most households. It was seen as a “wealth tax for the few”. That assumption is now weakening due to recent stealth tax moves by the Treasury.

In 2025, a Financial Conduct Authority survey revealed that just 18% of regulated financial advisers in the UK are women. This figure has remained almost unchanged since 2005, and reflects the stagnating gender diversity over the course of two decades.

In her latest piece for FT Adviser, Path Financial Planner, Rowan Harding DipPFS, talks about the gender disparity within the financial services industry. Rowan mentions that an overall lack of confidence holds women back from pursuing a career in advising, as well as the lack of flexible roles available.

Rowan stresses that whilst financial advisers are more focused than ever on the impact of the gender pay and pension gaps, the financial advice gap remains largely undiscussed:

“As more women seek financial advice, the industry needs to reckon with its own gender gap and ensure they have all the possible knowledge and skills to provide sound financial advice, for everyone.”

David Macdonald, Path Financial Chair and Founder, has written a practical guide on how families can reduce inheritance tax.

David’s guide covers how inheritance tax works, how to reduce your exposure, and the planning tools available to you. It also answers the all important question - why do so many families never get round to making the changes?

“Most guides on inheritance tax dive straight into numbers and thresholds. This guide takes a different approach: it starts with a simple truth many people quietly recognise but rarely talk about - that careful planning can help reduce the tax your family might pay. How much can be achieved, and the best approach, depends on your personal circumstances, the way your assets are held, and the timing of any decisions.”
