Do you need financial advice on pensions?

If you do, we can help.

More and more people are choosing to cash in their pensions either in full or in part but is it the right thing to do? That’s where financial advice on pensions would help. Since 2018 the number of people cashing in their pension in full has increased by almost 30%. That means over 100,000 more people cashed in their pensions last year. The Financial Conduct Authority are rightly concerned about this increase in numbers because they are concerned about people being able to afford their retirements.

This is important with over 12 million people on course to have less than the basic income requirements in retirement. That’s 31% of retirees according to Scottish Widows. This is confirmed by Standard Life research which found that 30% of people said their living standards had worsened since they retired. Compared with only 20% who said they felt better off.

Who is planning to retire early?

According to modelling from savings provider Flagstone only 15% of people are on track to retire early with their desired level of income at the age they would like to retire.

That’s a utopian position, but it does show how far away 85% of people are from their dream retirement if you like.

Flagstone also broke the numbers down into different sectors and found that those in the travel and transport industries were the least likely to achieve their ultimate goals, whilst unsurprisingly those in the finance sector were the most likely to achieve their ideal retirements. But still only 21.2% of finance sector workers.

The ideal retirement age was 61.

The bad news is that the modelling found that the majority of people wouldn’t be able to achieve their ultimate retirement goals until they were 83! People will continue to retire early of course, but not with the lifestyle that would have liked.

Once again, we are proud to announce that Christina Clegg Financial Planning Services has achieved the status of Vouched For Top Rated Financial Advisors for 2026.

This is the thirteenth year running that we have achieved the accolade, stretching back to its inception back in 2014.

On Saturday 21st March we featured in the Vouched For supplement published in The Times newspaper. The supplement contains details of all the Vouched For Top rated Financial Advisors who qualified this year.

To qualify every firm had to achieve a minimum of 10 verified client reviews posted on to the Vouched For platform. These reviews form the back bone of the scheme which provides potential clients with access to an advisor who has demonstrated a key level of trust with their clients leading to a review.

Pension advice to benefit from new performance indicators

The FCA is set to make pension advice easier by introducing new performance data requirement on pension providers.

The proposals are backed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and The Pensions Regulator (TPR). Pension providers will be required to publish annual data to their customers which details their overall performance including costs and service standards.

The data will be colour coded so that it’s easy to understand. Green for good performance through Amber and then Red for poor performance.

The idea is to set performance comparison benchmarks and then allow customers to see at a glance whether their provider is doing well or not.

Social Media investing advice is in the spotlight again.

We’ve been here many times before, but once again investing advice tips online are back in the spotlight.

This time its TikTok causing the problems. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has said that almost 70% of the influencer video investing advice tips break the rules. Inheritance Tax raid on pensions

There has been much publicity about the governments planned inheritance tax raid on personal pensions. This will come into force in 2027.

Although the government claims that less than 10% of estates will have to pay inheritance tax (IHT), with frozen tax thresholds and growing house values, this is only going to increase. Despite the government saying IHT only affects a few people it is disliked by the majority of people. A You Gov survey found that 54% of people wanted the tax to be abolished and 75% said that they thought the 40% tax rate was too high.

Probate Help needed

As the number of estates facing Inheritance Tax (IHT) bills rises, the need for probate help is also under pressure.

Over 30,000 estates had to pay IHT last year a rise of 15% on the year before. That means probate is needed in over 5% of deaths in the UK. Over £6.7 billion in IHT was paid last year. This will only rise once pensions are included in the value of an estate, which is what the government has announced.

The number of online searches for inheritance tax advice has soared by 150%, as have other search terms like inheritance tax for grandchildren.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has said that firms will be able to provide simplified financial planning from early next year.

This has been on the cards for a while and is aimed at the 90% who do not use a financial adviser. Many because of perceptions about the cost of advice. Or because they don’t understand what their savings and investment options are.

Millions may benefit from the changes which will only apply to simplified financial planning advice about pensions and investments. Some estimates suggest that there are 25 million people who could benefit.

Pensioner financial advice - some facts and figures

Some pensioner financial advice facts and figures have been produced by research from LCP and the University of Bath which confirmed some trends in retirement which we see regularly. These included:

• People retiring without a final salary pension tend to rely on the state pension for their income. This highlights the value of final salary schemes.

• Homeowners tend to spend more in retirement particularly when they first retire. Compared with those renting.

• Spending on luxury items reduces as people get older, especially beyond 80.

The research will help the government’s latest review into improvements to pension financial advice information options at retirement. Known as the targeted support framework.
