✨ It’s that time of the month again…TEDDY’S TAX TIPS! ✨

📈 Thinking about how to extract maximum tax efficiency from your business this tax year ends? Have you thought about making additional pension contributions?

The tax rules vary depending on whether you are a company director or a self employed person, so let's break down the key differences:

*Sole Trader* : personal tax relief as a self-employed individual, you make personal contributions out of your net (taxed) income.
Basic Rate Relief: Your pension provider automatically tops up your contribution by 20%.
Higher Rate Relief: If you are a 40% or 45% taxpayer, you must claim the remaining 20% to 25% tax relief manually through your Self Assessment tax return.

*Limited Company director* : You should make employer contributions directly from the company bank account.
Corporation Tax Deduction: The contribution is treated as an allowable business expense. This directly reduces your company’s taxable profits, saving you up to 25% in Corporation Tax.
National Insurance Holiday: Money paid directly into your pension bypasses National Insurance entirely—saving both the employer and employee portions.

Is your set up the most tax efficient for your personal circumstances?
(we don't give advice on types of pension etc, only the tax treatment).

As always, any questions please give us a shout!

What you need to do:
✅ Switch to digital record-keeping, using MTD-compatible software.
✅ Prepare for quarterly updates - instead of just one annual return.

Hello everyone time for another of my tax tips! As beer garden season is upon us, thought I would cover entertaining as it’s one people get wrong a lot!

Starting with the bad news there is no tax relief for entertaining customers or suppliers, this applies for both companies and sole traders.

Entertainment can be an important business expense so you should still record it to get a good picture of your business costs but don’t include it in your tax return!

However, the good news! If you have staff (or you are a director on the payroll of your limited company) you can claim up to £150 a year for each employee and their partner that you have spent entertaining them. Usually people use this to have a “Christmas party” but it can be spent across the year for things like after work drinks too! Just be careful not to exceed this allowance as this then creates a taxable benefit for your employees!

As always there are a few rules and exemptions to be aware of so we’ve included a few links! If you have any questions or need any help give us a shout!

🐾 Teddy’s Tax Tips 🐾
Woof woof! 🐶 Teddy here, back with another paw-some tax tip to help you keep more treats in your pocket!
Today’s tip is all about claiming travel expenses 🚗✈️ and how it works differently if you’re a sole trader vs a limited company.

🐕 If you’re a Sole Trader:
You can claim travel expenses for business-related trips — like visiting clients or suppliers. This includes things like fuel, train tickets, parking, and even hotel stays if needed. Just remember… no claiming for your everyday commute to your regular place of work (even if it’s your favourite park 🦴).

🐕‍🦺 If you run a Limited Company:
Things work a little differently! The company pays for your business travel, and you can either:
✔️ Reimburse yourself for expenses
✔️ Or claim mileage if you use your personal vehicle
The key is making sure everything is wholly and exclusively for business — HMRC doesn’t like any funny business (and neither do I! 🐾).

🐾 Teddy’s Top Tip:
Keep good records! Receipts, mileage logs, and notes on why you travelled will make your life MUCH easier if anyone comes sniffing around.
That’s all for today — stay pawsitive and tax-smart! 🐶💼
