On 19-21 May 2014, the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce will be organizing the Fourth Annual ICC Asia-Pacific Conference "International Arbitration - A Regional Journey". The aim of this two-day conference is to spark a spirited debate among panelists and participants from both sides of the Pacific as they discuss trends in international arbitration practice in the Asia-Pacific Region.

As the economy and cross-border transactions surge in the Asia-Pacific region, so does dispute resolution. Consequently, the region remains at the cutting edge of arbitration trends. Join us on a journey of the exciting developments that continue to enhance the Asia-Pacific region. We will learn from practitioners, arbitrators, in-house counsel and law makers why the region has embraced the benefits of international arbitration and how it seeks to find ways to make best practices more accessible. The conference will explore the issues which affect the international arbitration field now and learn about the opportunities that are yet to come.

Arbitrators, legal practitioners, in-house counsel, and academics who wish to know more about developments in international arbitration in the Asia-Pacific Region.

ICC Sees Progress on G20 Agenda, Opportunities Ahead

The G20 has made steady progress on business goals since 2011, according to the latest G20 Business Scorecard, published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The third installment of the annual scorecard reveals a year-on-year improvement in score since ICC”s monitoring began, while still noting that progress remains poor in several crucial areas, including energy and the environment.

“The G20 continues to make progress on a robust agenda to accelerate economic growth and job creation,” said ICC Chairman Terry McGraw, chairman of McGraw Hill Financial and also chairman of USCIB. “The business community is committed to working together with policy makers on issues of critical importance such as trade and investment that can produce job growth and long-term prosperity.”

Overall, the scorecard rates G20 responsiveness to business priorities as better than the two earlier scorecards.

Among the positive outcomes that led to this year’s higher score was the G20 support for the historic World Trade Organization Agreement on Trade Facilitation and the extension of the G20 standstill on protectionist measures until the end of 2016. The improvement in score also reflected G20 efforts to increase access to finance for small and medium businesses and the recognition of business as a key partner in the fight against corruption.

But the positive overall trend also masked deficiencies in individual categories. Among the lows was the failure to recognize the importance of information and communication technologies (ICTs), no movement on carbon pricing and a lack of discussions on a high-standard multilateral framework for international investment.

The scorecard – which rates the overall responses by G20 nations to key business goals during the 2013 Russian presidency – measures progress on business priorities on a scale of: “inadequate,” “poor,” “fair” or “good.” The scorecard looks at the G20”s collective response to business goals only and does not rate individual countries or the G20”s entire agenda. Four areas are assessed: Trade and Investment; Financing for Growth and Development; Energy and Environment; and Anti-Corruption.

A fifth chapter, Job Creation and Human Capital, was prepared in partnership with the International Organization of Employers (IOE) and the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD (BIAC). This chapter examines the steps taken by the G20 to address global unemployment but does not rate its progress at this stage.

The 5th annual session of the Cameroon Business Forum kicks off in Douala this Thursday March 6, 2014.

Moving Cameroon towards an emergent economy is an important preoccupation within government and private circles. Making recommendations and applying them, or fully implementing them, is in essence a critical challenge for vision 2035. Born out of this view, the Cameroon Business Forum (CBF) meets at the Douala Sawa Hotel this Thursday March 6 in view of assessing the level of application of the 49 recommendations made last year to drive the Cameroon’s economy towards emergence.

Prime Minister head of government Philemon Yang will preside over this crucial forum with participants from the public and private sectors. Main objective is to come up with a balanced sheet of implementation of the recommendations of the February 21, 2013, Forum in Douala. Particularly, participants will make an evaluation of the 49 recommendations that cuts across 13 sectors adopted at the 4th session of the forum. Also to be examined are modalities for an emergent Cameroon and define the mechanism for facilitation procedures.

Cameroonians look forward to seeing the business climate improve, especially if the Forum can inject an appropriate dynamic in the production sector and private initiative.

Created under the aegis of the World Bank in 2006 and went operational in 2009, CBF is a public/private constructive dialogue platform aimed at improving the business climate in Cameroon. It is designed to assist the government in its efforts towards a sustained economic growth. About 200 participants from the public and private sectors, donors and civil society will harp on how to give a push to national economic growth.
