Tax season is here and AFSA is back with its FREE Tax Clinic 2023!

A group of trained volunteers will provide free tax return services for low-income individuals and families. This year, the annual tax clinic will be held from March 25-26, and April 1-2.

Hey SAF!

Are you interested in learning how to file personal taxes?
Do you want to apply what you have learned in your accounting courses?

If so, AFSA’s annual Tax Clinic is the time for you to shine!

As a tax clinic volunteer, you will be able to give back to the local community during this pandemic by filing income tax returns for residents and students in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. You will be provided with professional training on filing tax returns, so no prior experience is required! This experience will not only allow you to apply your knowledge in a practical setting but will also enable you to gain valuable technical and soft skills to build your resume.

Be sure to apply before November 27th, 2022!

The tentative dates for the Tax Clinic are March 25th, March 26th,

Please note that volunteering for AFSA Tax Clinic is a significant time commitment and you are expected to: Attend a mandatory 8-hour virtual training session that will be split over two days, on February 25th and 26th.

(The virtual training session is not mandatory for experienced volunteers, but it is highly recommended.) Work AT LEAST three 3-hour shifts tentatively scheduled on March 25th, March 26th, April 1st, and April 2nd.

Due to limited positions, we are unable to accept all applicants looking to volunteer for the AFSA Tax Clinic. Emails will be sent out to accepted and unaccepted volunteers to inform you of our decision.

Hi SAF! Need a break from exams? Want to have some fun in the sun with your friends! AFSA is hosting a trip to Wonderland July 10th! At 8:30AM, busses will be leaving from campus to take you all to Wonderland for a fun and thrilling day! At Wonderland, you’ll have your passes for the day, as well as lunch provided! Busses will be heading back to Waterloo at 6:00 PM. Lunch will be provided! The trip will cost $20 for students who have paid the levy, and $40 for those who haven’t. Students attending MUST be getting on the bus coming from Waterloo. Payment link is in bio. Tickets are on sale until July 8th at 11:30PM, and tickets are limited. Hope to see you all there!

The AFSA/AFEF by-election process has now begun!

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT POSITIONS I CAN RUN FOR?
There is one seat remaining on the AFSA Board of Directors . For a complete description of roles and responsibilities, refer to http://www.uwafsa.ca/executive-and-bod. In addition, there is one seat remaining on the AFEF Board of Directors. For a complete description of roles and responsibilities, refer to https://uwaterloo.ca/.../accounting-and-finance-endowment.

WHEN ARE THE DEADLINES?
June 19th – Deadline to submit applications @11:59 PM EST
June 20th – Candidates vetted and announced via social media and email
June 20th – Campaigning begins at 8AM EST
June 23rd – Campaigning ends @11:59PM EST
June 24th – Voting begins at 12AM EST and ends on June 24th at 11:59PM EST
June 27th – Results announced
*Please note that the voting period for these by-elections will be held on one day only.

WHAT IS THE BY-ELECTIONS PROCESS?
1. Anyone enrolled in the School of Accounting and Finance (AFM, Math-CPA, Bio-CPA, and CFM) for September 2021 in 2A and up are eligible to run! The only exception is for the position of President, where the student must also expect to be on campus for his/her study term for at least 8 months that year. Candidates who applied in the general election are welcome to apply again in the by-election.

2. The election process formally starts with the submission of an application for the position you wish to run for (one position per person), the links for which can be found below.

3. Once applications are approved by the elections committee (you will receive an email along with further rules and regulations), the campaign period begins. During the campaign period, candidates can promote their platform (online only) and SAF students can participate through the elections forum (http://safstudentvote.freeforums.net/).

4. Once the campaign period ends, voting will begin. During this period, all SAF students (including MAcc) can vote (or abstain from voting, i.e. not vote for any candidate) for all positions as well as any referendums. The vote will be anonymous and held online through Feds (the link will be provided at a later date through uwafsa.ca and AFSA’s page).

5. Subsequently, the votes will be tallied and the successful candidates will be contacted through email while the final results will be announced on www.uwafsa.ca.

6. If there are still positions open after the by-elections, the remaining executives will be appointed by the current Board of Directors.

Hey SAF! Want to show off your basketball skills? Are you trying to be victorious and have bragging rights over your fellow competitive peers?
