November is financial literacy month in Canada . I participated in the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada's "Stretch $15 Challenge" to encourage Canadians to .

I stretched $15 making this chicken soup meal:

4 lbs of chicken drumstick - $7 (on sale at Asian grocery store)
4 carrots - $1
2 celery stalks - $0.75
1 large onion - $0.50
4 cloves of garlic - $0.20
16 cups of water
2.5 tbsp of salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
Cooked rice or pasta can be added - $0.75

Total cost of ingredients $10.20.

How would you stretch $15?

I purchased a package of sausages on the weekend for $13.49, but got charged $14.99. I notified the cashier and asked if I would get a discount for the error. She reversed the $14.99 charge and gave me a $10 discount....so I was only billed for $3.49. This was at No Frills.

The Retail Council of Canada has a voluntary policy set with major retailers like Loblaws, Walmart, Sobeys, Canadian Tire, Home Depot where if the scanned price is greater than the advertised price, the customer can get a discount up to $10. If your item costs less than $10, you can get that item for free.

Since this policy is voluntary, you will need to ask the retailer about the discount if you get charged more at the register than the advertised price.

Hi Everyone,

CTV News recently reported on how some Canadians did a Google search for "best gic rates" to invest their money but ended up losing their savings. They clicked on one of the top search results that took them to a website that claimed to be selling on behalf of PC Financial, but it was a fake website. One retiree lost $750K thinking he was going to get a GIC for 6.5% interest!

Please be careful!

Hi Everyone, please ensure you have strong passwords for your email accounts. Also, if you receive funds through e-transfer, turn on the auto-deposit feature. CTV news Toronto recently published an article about a landlord who got his email account hacked. The landlord was expecting e-transfers from his tenants, but the hackers had got into his email account, intercepted the e-transfers and deposited the funds into their own accounts.

Hackers can also see what other services you signed up for once they are in your email inbox. They can start resetting your passwords so it’s important to have a strong password for your email account.
