Beyond the tariff dispute lies a larger story.

The latest Canada-U.S. trade confrontation may ultimately be remembered less for the tariffs themselves than for the economic changes it accelerates.
Growing exports to non-U.S. markets, new energy and transportation infrastructure, expanding trade relationships with Europe and the Indo-Pacific, and renewed emphasis on critical minerals and strategic industries are broadening Canada’s economic options.

Our latest paper examines how these developments could contribute to a long-term economic rebalancing while preserving the benefits of North American integration.

Today we remember the victims of September 11, 2001, and honour the courage of the first responders and ordinary citizens who acted in a moment of profound tragedy.

As Canadians, we join our American friends and neighbours in honouring the memory of those who lost their lives and all those forever affected by the events of that day.

What will the world look like by 2028?

Leadership transitions across major powers, evolving geopolitical alignments, demographic change, technological uncertainty, and growing competition over energy and critical minerals may collectively reshape the global investment landscape before the decade’s end.

These developments could create a fundamentally different environment from the one that has defined the first half of the 2020s.

In our 𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗜 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 2028 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘵 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘸: 𝘈 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬, we examine why the period between 2028 and 2030 may represent a critical reset window for investors, businesses, and policymakers, and identify the trends most likely to shape the next global investment cycle.

We are also proud that a condensed version of this analysis appears in The Visionaries. Readers seeking a deeper examination of the themes explored there can access the full report below.

The July 1 CUSMA review delivered what many expected: neither a clean renewal nor a collapse of the agreement. CUSMA remains in force, but annual reviews and ongoing negotiations have introduced a new layer of uncertainty for businesses operating across North America.

The bigger development may be President Trump’s proposed 50% tariff on Canadian imports, scheduled for August 19. While the measure could face legal challenges, it signals that trade pressure may increasingly be applied outside formal CUSMA review mechanisms.

Canada’s position is stronger than headline trade figures suggest. From energy and critical minerals to autos, agriculture, and manufacturing inputs, Canada remains deeply embedded in North American supply chains. That integration creates leverage, but not immunity.

Our latest analysis examines:
✅ What the July review actually changed
✅ The implications of the proposed 50% tariff
✅ Canada’s key sources of leverage
✅ Risks for investment, trade, and supply chains
✅ Optimistic, base-case, adverse, and severe-disruption scenarios

The key question over the coming months is whether Canada can translate its structural importance to North American competitiveness into negotiating leverage without making significant policy concessions.

FUN FACT! Did you know that Canada contains roughly 60% of all the lakes on Earth, boasting an estimated 2 million bodies of freshwater? In fact, Canada holds about 9% of the world’s total renewable water supply. Now that’s a FUN FACT!

As the July 1, 2026 review begins, Canada and Mexico are pushing for a 16‑year extension, while the United States signals a more tactical approach focused on negotiation leverage. The most likely outcome isn’t a clean renewal or collapse, but an extended period of managed bargaining—featuring annual review risk, sector-specific deals, and continued pressure on autos, agriculture, energy, and China-linked supply chains.

Despite Canada’s heavy reliance on U.S. markets, its role in energy, critical minerals, food, and integrated supply chains makes it indispensable. The months ahead will test whether U.S. leverage outweighs North America’s deep economic interdependence—or ultimately reinforces it.

Canada and ASEAN are closing in on a landmark Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA), with momentum building toward a 2026 conclusion. While more than half the chapters are finalized, negotiations continue over critical issues such as tariffs, rules of origin, investment protections, and digital trade.
The deal relfects a clear strategic alignment; ASEAN is seeking reliable energy supplies, diversified partnerships, and reduced dependence on the U.S. and China, while Canada is accelerating its Indo-Pacific and export diversification strategy. Canada’s energy exports—particularly LNG—along with its stable, rules-based economy position it as a valuable long-term partner.

If concluded, ACAFTA FTA would significantly expand Canada’s presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing regions and establish a durable economic partnership that reshapes its role in the Indo-Pacific.

“Resilience has replaced efficiency as the organizing principle of global trade.”

The second edition of BERTANI FDI Compass explores how the Strait of Hormuz crisis is doing more than disrupting energy flows—it’s reshaping the architecture of global supply chains.

As geopolitical risk is priced into every barrel, contract, and corridor, Canada is emerging in a new light: not just as a commodity exporter, but as a Pacific-facing strategic partner—offering scale without instability and access without exposure.

In this edition: How Canada is positioning itself as the Indo-Pacific’s next strategic supply chain hub—and why this shift is only just beginning.

Welcome to BERTANI FDI Compass!

BERTANI FDI Compass is a research‑driven newsletter examining structural developments in foreign direct investment, trade architecture, cross‑border capital flows, and geopolitical risk across advanced and emerging economies.
Each edition analyzes how global frameworks, trade agreements, policy institutions, and macroeconomic shifts interact to shape global trade and investment patterns.
As geopolitical fragmentation, supply‑chain reconfiguration, and policy volatility redefine cross‑border decision‑making, Bertani FDI Compass serves as a consistent analytical reference for understanding how jurisdictions position themselves within an increasingly constrained and risk‑adjusted global landscape.

We are pleased to present our first edition with contributions from our Economic and Geopolitical Risk Advisory Services Team.
