FinanceTalk FAQ #3

Why should I have private insurance in addition to my provincial plan?

If I become sick or disabled, doesn't my Government plan take care of me?

Provincial Health Care Plans
Provincial plans vary from province to province. There are many medical services not covered by government plans. It’s a good idea to have a plan that fills the gap between those expenses that occur but may not be covered by your government plan. Expenses such as physio-therapy, eye examinations, chiropractors, and many more.

Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
Disability benefits may be available to you, but only if you have made enough contributions to the CPP. Your disability must prevent you from working at any job on a regular basis, and must be long lasting or likely to result in death.

Workers Compensation Plans
Worker compensation plans are designed to protect you ONLY when you are injured at work. A private disability plan means that your income is protected all the time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is not mandatory for all occupations in all provinces to be covered by a Workers Compensation plan. There is a plan that could provide you with a viable cheaper alternative to this coverage. Knowing your options may save you money – speak with an advisor to find out more.

FinanceTalk Q&A

If I am self-employed and I become disabled, what will happen to my business?

Consider what you regularly pay for fixed business expenses, such as lease payments, property rent, utilities, professional fees, and business insurance. These recurring expenses don’t stop just because you aren’t able to work. As the key contributor to the success of your business, you should ensure that your expenses will continue to be covered if you are unable to generate the revenue required to pay them while you are disabled. Business Overhead Expense coverage can help with this.

An old Cherokee chief sat down to teach his grandson about life.

β€œThere’s a fight going on inside me,” he tells the young boy, β€œa fight between two wolves.”

β€œOne wolf is evil. It’s full of malice, anger, greed, self-pity, and false pride. The other is good. It’s full of peace, love, joy, kindness, and humility.”

β€œThis same fight is going on inside you and everyone else on the face of the earth.”

The grandson was quiet, pondering this revelation momentarily before asking, β€œGrandfather, which wolf will win?”

The old man smiled and replied, β€œThe one you feed.”

Moral of the story:

Good and evil exist within each of us. It’s our responsibility to own that reality and do whatever we can to nurture the good. If you want to be successful in life, stop feeding your excuses. They will eventually win and forget about your dreams. Instead, provide your mind with positive thoughts and positive actions and you will get positive results.

Debate: WHAT IF LIFE IS LONG?

Most people live today for today. Spend spend and spend like no tomorrow.

Statistics Canada show that the number of Canadians aged 100 or older has increased from just 1,065 in 1971 to 9,545 in the 2021 census.

The number of Canadians living to 100 and beyond reached a record high in 2021. Some centenarians say getting there is all about keeping your hands busy, having a loving family and enjoying life's small pleasures.
