This time of year, CRA-related scams are increasingly common — and they’re getting more convincing.

A couple important reminders to protect yourself:

CRA will not contact you for information by text message. If you get a text claiming to be from the CRA — it’s a scam.

Emails from the CRA won’t include login links or specific addresses to send payment to. They may notify you to check your online mail, but you’ll need to go directly to the CRA website yourself. Never click a direct link in the email to log in.

CRA may contact you via phone, but they won’t ask for sensitive personal information such as passwords or banking details.

When in doubt, go directly to your CRA online mailbox through the official website, or contact their primary telephone line yourself.

Several years behind on your taxes? Relief may be available at both the personal and corporate tax levels.

Through the CRA’s Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP), taxpayers can come forward to file outstanding returns, and may be eligible for relief of up to 100% of penalties and 75% of applicable interest.

If you’ve been putting off dealing with unfiled returns or unreported income, it may be worth exploring your options.

Are you a B.C. resident with a child under 9 years old?

The Government of B.C. currently offers a $1,200 RESP contribution per child, through the B.C. Training and Education Savings Grant — and more than 50% of qualified families miss it.

To qualify:
✔️ You and your child must be B.C. residents
✔️ Your child must be between ages 6–8
✔️ Your child must be named as the beneficiary of an RESP with a participating financial institution

⚠️ The RESP grant is no longer available once your child turns 9 — so timing matters!

Note that this program and grant is scheduled to be discontinued effective April 1, 2028.

Government of B.C. released its 2026 budget yesterday. A few key changes to note:

- the first B.C. income tax bracket has been increased by 0.54%.

- PST will soon apply on more professional services, including accounting and bookkeeping.

- the Speculation and Vacancy Tax has increased from 3% to 4%.

Friendly Reminder: Two weeks to go until the 2025 RRSP deadline! March 2/26 is the final day to contribute for a deduction on your 2025 taxes.

Starting February 9, 2026, the CRA will no longer mail Notices of Assessment or Reassessment. They’ll be available only through CRA online portals.

If you’re not already set up, now’s a good time to register for your:

✔️ Personal CRA account
✔️ Business CRA account (if applicable)

Managing your CRA account just got easier!

Our new self-service option may allow users to regain access to their account without needing to call. This enhancement is part of our ongoing efforts to expand digital self-service options, in line with our 100-Day Service Improvement Plan.

If you’ve forgotten your sign-in information or the answers to your security questions, you can simply register online for a new credential. https://ow.ly/sM2750XU9uK

Just make sure you have your multi-factor authentication information and a recent tax return handy. These will help you get your new credential.
