More and more we are seeing people using AI products to get investment, tax, and financial planning advice. Some people have used AI for investment trading advice. Others ask AI for suggestions on planning tactics. Often, incredibly detailed information – including existing account, investment and tax deals are being uploaded by users into the AI for analysis and suggestions.

What comes out…well, that’s a different story. The challenge with AI large-language models (ie, ChatGPT, etc) is that they have been trained on a trove of data from the internet…and the internet is not exactly always filled with accurate information. Additionally, there are many things which can be relevant to your situation that the AI overlooks, or doesn’t know about that can radically transform what is an appropriate course of action.

The last few months have seen quite a change in the world, with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) seeming to invade everything from our software, to social media feeds, and perhaps more annoyingly, LinkedIn direct messages. It has certainly attracted its fair share of investor attention too, with just a handful of AI stocks now making up a massive concentration of the USA-based Standard and Poors 500 index. Seven stocks on the S&P500 now make up 40% of its value. In a few weeks, two new companies, Anthropic and Open AI are expected to come to market, and immediately enter the SP500, further concentrating risk.

Over the years, I nourished my monetary baby, and watched its balance grow and grow. Years of coddling, and playing with it, waiting for that big growth spurt to hit. Time flew by, and now, here we are, with it all grown up. . It has gone from baby savings, to a fully-funded adult RRSP, and someday will become a RRIF.

So, if you’re like me, and your RRSP is all grown up, what should you do now?

Be a smartie-pants when it comes to online giving outside the charitable space: take the time to verify that the need is real, that the recipient has authorized the fund, and most importantly, that you have a way to get your money back if it later turns out something was remiss...

I think we can all agree that this past January was a particularly eventful month in terms of the news cycle. I debated just what to reference in this newsletter, but frankly, most of what we might tie in has been either too worrying or too depressing, and I’m sure that most of you wouldn’t […...

"Elliott realizes the unique situation the hand-scratched will presents. In Saskatchewan, hand-written “Holograph Wills” are legally binding – but never before has one been written on anything other than paper. He hires a local photographer to take a picture of the fender. He searches for other legal precedents and can only find one: a 1926 case from England when a will was written on the egg of a hen."

"One would think that it is a fairly simple process to gift a loved one funds, but its not always as straight forward as it seems. In Canada, giving money to adult family, other than your spouse, is largely a tax-free event for all parties, although, if the gift-granting person is liquidating non-registered investments, they may trigger capital gains when selling those investments."
