Hiring your child in your business may help reduce family taxes by shifting income into a lower tax bracket when done properly.

Wages paid to your child may be deductible to the business if:

- The work is legitimate
- Pay is reasonable for the work performed
- Hours and duties are documented
- Payroll is processed properly with T4 reporting when required

The CRA expects family employees to be treated like any other employee, including proper records and reasonable compensation based on market rates.

Talk with your accountant before adding family members to payroll.

Your business structure affects how you file taxes, manage liability, and report income to the CRA.

There are three main business structures:

- Sole Proprietorship

Simple and common for small businesses. Business income is reported on your personal tax return, but there is no legal separation between you and the business.

- Partnership

Two or more people share income, expenses, and responsibilities. Each partner reports their share of income on their personal tax return.

- Corporation

A separate legal entity that files its own corporate tax return and may provide greater liability protection and tax planning opportunities.

Each structure comes with different tax obligations, filing requirements, and levels of personal liability protection.

The structure that works best for one business may not be the best fit for another, especially as your income and business grow.

Reviewing your business structure regularly can help support better tax planning, compliance, and long term business goals.

Scammers are getting more convincing.

Be cautious of emails, texts, or phone calls claiming you owe money to the CRA or have a tax refund waiting.

Common CRA scam red flags:
- Threats or urgent payment demands
- Requests for gift cards, crypto, or wire transfers
- Suspicious links asking for banking or personal information
- Messages promising unexpected refunds or benefits

The CRA will never ask you to pay a tax debt using prepaid credit cards, gift cards, Interac e-transfers, or cryptocurrency.

The CRA never uses text messages, instant messaging apps (like WhatsApp), or emails with clickable links to request personal details or issue refunds.

CRA generally issues formal notices and correspondence via postal mail.

If something feels suspicious, do not click links or send information.

Verify directly through CRA My Account or Canada.ca first

Things like:

- Expanding locations
- Increasing payroll
- Investing in equipment
- Raising prices
- Managing cash flow
- Planning for taxes
- Scaling operations

These decisions should be backed by real financial data and planning, not guesswork, so you can move forward with more confidence and clarity.
