Your kid is 8. Or 10. Or 12. And you still haven't opened an RESP.

First: you are VERY unlikely to be the only parent reading this thinking, “Oh. Right. That.”

Second: don't let not starting earlier become the reason you don't start now.

Unused basic CESG room can carry forward, which means there may still be opportunities to receive grants on future contributions. There are rules around how much you can receive in a year, so this is exactly the kind of thing worth sitting down and talking through.

And no, we're not going to ask why you didn't start when they were a baby. You were busy keeping a baby alive. We get it.

Bring us the “we probably should have done this already” conversation. We'll help with the “okay, what do we do now?” part.

“They’re only in Grade 2. We have lots of time!”

You do. And that's actually the point.

An RESP isn't about knowing today whether your seven-year-old will go to university, college, or another eligible post-secondary program. It's about giving Future You (and Future Them!) more options.

A little bit saved regularly has years to grow. Eligible families may receive government education savings benefits along the way. And when graduation suddenly arrives (because somehow it ALWAYS suddenly arrives), you've already done some of the work.
