Sole Proprietor or Corporation — How Do You Know When It’s Time?

February is often when sole proprietors start reviewing their year
and quietly ask: “Should I still be doing this personally?”

Incorporation isn’t about being “bigger” —
it’s about whether your business has outgrown the sole proprietor structure.

Here are a few signs it might be time to at least have the conversation:

• Your profits are growing and you’re paying more personal tax each year
• You don’t need to take all the income out personally
• You want better tax planning flexibility
• You’re thinking longer-term (growth, succession, or asset protection)

Incorporation isn’t always the right move —
but when it is right, the benefits can be meaningful.

The key is timing and structure.
Done well, incorporation can support both your business and your personal tax plan.

Behind the scenes of a CPA office in February

February in a CPA office is not about rushing to file
It is about setting returns up properly

Here is what is actually happening right now behind the scenes

Reviewing client intake and engagement details
Cleaning up bookkeeping before tax prep begins
Pulling CRA data and reconciling it to client records
Spotting tax planning opportunities before deadlines hit
Answering the “should I do an RRSP” question with real context not generic advice
Double checking everything because accuracy matters

This phase is quieter, more detailed, and very strategic
And it is exactly what makes March and April smoother for everyone

Fast is not the goal
Doing it right is

When you get organized early, February works in your favor

RRSP season is here — but contributing just to “get a refund” isn’t always the answer.

RRSPs work best when they’re part of a bigger plan, not a last-minute decision.

✔️ Your income level
✔️ Retirement timing
✔️ Corporate vs. personal strategy
✔️ Cash flow (because real life still matters)

Tax planning isn’t one-size-fits-all — and it shouldn’t start in April.

Let’s make sure your RRSP actually works for you.

Holiday gifting for employees? Here’s what the CRA actually allows.
If you’re a business owner gearing up for year-end, this is a policy you really don’t want to miss. 👇

The CRA has a special administrative rule that lets you give up to TWO non-cash gifts per employee each year — completely tax-free to them — as long as the combined value stays under $500

This applies to common “special occasions” like:
✨ Christmas / Holidays
✨ Hanukkah
✨ Birthdays
✨ Weddings
✨ Or similar personal milestones

Here’s why this matters:
✔️ Your employee doesn’t pay tax on the gift
✔️ YOU can still deduct the cost as an employer
✔️ It’s a simple way to boost morale without creating payroll headaches

BUT — and this is the part many people miss —
💡 Cash and near-cash items (like gift cards) do NOT qualify.
If you hand out cash, e-transfers, or Visa/Mastercard-style gift cards, the CRA considers that a taxable employment benefit, which means extra reporting for you and extra tax for them.

Non-cash = good
Cash/near-cash = taxable

Save this post for your year-end checklist ✔️

This holiday season, our business is honoured to support Home Instead Courtenay/Campbell River Be a Santa to a Senior® (BASTAS) program — a heartfelt initiative that brightens the holidays for local older adults who may be alone or facing hardship.

Sometimes, it’s the little things that matter most…
A warm blanket, a favourite book, or a handwritten card that simply says:
“You’re remembered.” 💜

Now in its 4th year in the Comox Valley, this program helps ensure local seniors feel valued, cared for, and connected during the holiday season.

🎄 How You Can Help (November 1 – December 12, 2025)

1️⃣ Pick up a gift tag from one of the Be a Santa to a Senior trees:

• 🏠 Home Instead Office – 130B 19th St, Courtenay
• 🧾 Nicole Cahoon Inc., CPA – Unit 1, 350 17th St, Courtenay
• 💆 Sereia Day Spa – 2002B Comox Ave, Comox
• 🌿 Broken Squirrel Wellness – 445 10th St, Courtenay
• 🎨 Pearl Ellis Gallery – 1729 Comox Ave, Comox
• 🏡 Ana Fleck Lomba – Comox Valley Mortgage Broker – 1984 Comox Ave, Comox

2️⃣ Purchase the gift listed on the tag.
3️⃣ Return the gift with the tag attached to the same location.

💌 A short handwritten card or note can make the gift even more meaningful.

💖 Prefer to donate instead?
Home Instead can purchase a thoughtful gift on your behalf.

Send an e-Transfer to:
📧 [email protected] (Autodeposit)
Deadline: December 12, 2025

📝 In the message field, include:
• “BASTAS 2025 – Comox Valley”
• Your name + email (for confirmation)
• Optional: A short holiday greeting to include with the gift 💌

Every dollar goes directly toward a gift for a local senior. If donations exceed the cost of one gift, they are combined to fulfill even more wishes. 🎁

❤️ Let’s make sure every senior in our community feels seen, valued, and supported this holiday season.

We’re proud to stand with Home Instead and our Comox Valley community in spreading kindness and connection.
