What happened last week?

Volatility in markets returned for commodities and equities. Oil jumped on Monday to $104, dropped below $100 and then soared above $103 to end the week. Gold dropped on four of five days and sits near $4000. The narrowly held Dow managed a small gain for the week, while the TSX, S&P 500 and NASDAQ fell ½ to 1% for the week. All the equity indexes in the grid, above, lost ground on Thursday on Friday.

What happened last week?

Equities were mixed as the TSX and Dow moved upward and the S&P 500 and NASDAQ fell, the latter by 4½ percent last week. The TSX has regained its top performer status on year-to-date and 1-year results. The price of oil jumped 10 percent and ended the week over $100 per barrel due to increased geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, tanker attacks and quickening depletion of U.S. oil reserves.

What happened last week?
North American equity indexes rose ½% to 1% last week. They followed the same path with increases on Tuesday and Friday and losses on Wednesday and Thursday. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ reached record highs on Tuesday. Although it is 50% above its price from one year ago, West Texas Intermediate crude oil traded in a narrow price range for the second consecutive week.

What happened last week?
It appears, if only temporarily, that tension in the Middle East has eased slightly. The activity at the United Nations rose last week as major speeches were given. Progress was difficult to identify, rhetoric and threats were plentiful, and increased military action did not materialize.
As a result, the price of oil fell to $92 on Friday afternoon. It had jumped up on September 10th to over $100 and stayed above that threshold for more than a week. Despite this recent decline the price is up 61% this year, and 42% above its price from one year ago.

What happened last week?
It was quiet week for market results for equities, gold and oil, which does not seem like much of a coincidence. With gold and oil stable in percentage terms, notwithstanding their heightened levels compared to 2024 for gold and earlier in 2026 for oil, stocks were relatively unaffected by turmoil in the Middle East or other geopolitical events. The TSX and NASDAQ made small gains, the S&P 500 broke-even and the Dow, comprised of just 30 major U.S. corporations, lost more than 1½%.

What happened last week?

After four consecutive trading days of losses North American stock indexes rallied about 1% on Friday. The TSX fell more than 2%, while the U.S. indexes performed slightly better, but still lost ground.

What happened last week?

North American equity indexes changed little from last week’s closing levels. The more broadly based TSX and S&P 500 barely moved, and the Dow and NASDAQ each changed under ½ percent. Mixed news, that included domestic monetary policy, employment, balance of trade, the Middle East conflict and the price of oil, which jumped nearly 10%, conspired together to suppress value changes.

What happened last week?
The collapse of trade and tariff negotiations continued to dominate the news cycle in Canada. In addition to trade, markets reacted to domestic economic growth and elevated U.S. consumer inflation that drew close attention from the Federal Reserve Chair. For equities the overall reaction was muted with the TSX slightly down after a new record high closing level was reached early in the week, and American indexes each gained less than 1 percent. The Canadian dollar, gold, oil and bonds were all down.

What happened last week?
About 90 minutes before Trump’s 50% tariffs on more than $20 billion of Canadian imports were to take effect a three-day pause was announced by the President on social media. No details were released; negotiators have additional time to arrive at a comprehensive arrangement. The extra time did not provide a solution, and negotiations ended without a deal. The details from the Canadian perspective were communicated to the nation in an address by Prime Minister Carney. No deal is better than a bad deal from the Canadian perspective as they sought access to U.S. markets, and the Americans “asked too much and offered too little” according to Carney’s summary.
