Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the things we have to be thankful for. 😊

Even though That Classic Bookkeeper is still a relatively new business, I am incredibly thankful for all the support and encouragement I've received along the way! ❤️

Whether you've liked or shared one of my posts, followed my business page, recommended my services, or simply offered a few words of encouragement, it truly means a lot to me.

Starting and growing a business is definitely an adventure, and I'm excited to see what the future holds! 😁

But today isn't about bookkeeping, payroll, or all those receipts that may or may not be hiding somewhere. 😂

Today is about taking some time to appreciate the people and blessings in our lives.

You made it through another week of running a business! 😁

Now for the important question...

How many things did you add to your to-do list this week while trying to cross ONE thing off? 😂

Running a business has a funny way of doing that.

There's always something that needs your attention—customers, emails, paperwork, payroll, bookkeeping... and somehow that receipt sitting on your desk has been patiently waiting for you since Tuesday. 👀😂

💡 Myth Wednesday!

MYTH: “There’s money in my business bank account, so my business must be profitable!” 💰😁

Wouldn't it be nice if it were that simple? 😂

Your bank balance and your business's profit are two different things.

Your bank account tells you how much money you have available at that particular moment, while your profit looks at the income your business has earned compared with its expenses over a period of time.

And there can be plenty of things happening in your bank account that don't necessarily tell you whether your business is profitable.

That's one of the reasons keeping your bookkeeping organized and up to date is so important. Accurate financial records can give you a much clearer picture of how your business is actually doing instead of relying on the number you see when you open your banking app. 📚

So while seeing money in the bank is certainly better than seeing $0... 😂

It doesn't automatically mean your business made a profit!

📚 Monday Bookkeeping Check-In!

September is officially over, which means it's time for the monthly question every business owner loves to hear...

Are your books caught up? 👀😂
It's amazing how quickly a month can go by. One minute it's September 1st, and the next you're wondering why there are receipts on your desk that you definitely meant to deal with three weeks ago. 😅

Keeping your bookkeeping up to date throughout the year can make it much easier to know what's happening in your business without having to dig through months of transactions later.

That can include things like categorizing transactions, reconciling bank and credit card accounts, organizing financial records, and reviewing your books to make sure everything is where it should be.

And if September got away from you? Don't worry—October is a perfectly good time to get things organized again! 😊

So, do you remember the PST posts from a few weeks ago? Well... there is an update!

Originally, starting October 1st, professional service businesses were supposed to start charging PST, which included bookkeeping — including this bookkeeping business right here! 🙋‍♀️
But surprise! The B.C. government has decided to pause it.

I know there are people who were preparing for it and even had everything set up who are now banging their heads against the wall... which includes me. 🤣

Which just goes to show that even if you prepare for everything, sometimes something completely outside of your control comes along and changes everything.

💰 Friday Payroll Fun Fact!

I think it's safe to say that employees are pretty big fans of getting paid on time! 😁

But for a busy business owner, finding the time to sit down and process payroll can sometimes be easier said than done.

Payroll isn't just about sending money to your employees. There are hours and other payroll information to review, deductions to calculate, records to maintain, and deadlines to keep track of.

And while payroll might only be one item on a business owner's very long to-do list, it's a pretty important item to the employees waiting for payday! 😂

That's where having someone help with payroll can come in handy, and that someone just so happens to be me. 😊

While I do the payroll, you can spend more time focusing on running your business—and your employees can continue being big fans of getting paid on time. After all, timely payroll means less chance of a workplace riot, and we've got to prevent those where possible. 😉😂

When you hear That Classic Bookkeeper, bookkeeping is probably the first thing that comes to mind—but bookkeeping isn't the only service I offer! 😊
I can also help businesses with their payroll needs.
Payroll can involve more than simply calculating what an employee should be paid. Depending on your business and the services you need, payroll support can include:
💰 Processing payroll based on employee hours and information provided
🧾 Calculating and preparing CRA payroll remittances
📊 Preparing payroll reports and summaries
📅 Helping keep payroll records organized throughout the year
📄 Year-end payroll support, including T4/T4A preparation where applicable
As with bookkeeping, accurate payroll depends on having complete and timely information. Employee hours, pay rates, new hires, terminations, and other changes all need to be communicated so payroll can be processed accurately and on time.

Why should you keep your receipts? 🧾
You made the purchase, it shows up on your bank statement, so do you really need to keep the receipt? 🤔
Yes!
Your bank or credit card statement shows that a transaction happened, but it doesn't always provide all the information needed to understand what the purchase was for.
So, why are receipts and supporting documents important?
🧾 They provide details about the transaction.
A receipt or invoice can show exactly what was purchased, when it was purchased, and who it was purchased from.
🔎 They make bookkeeping easier.
When supporting documents are available, there's less guessing about what a transaction was for and how it should be recorded.
📂 They help keep your records organized.
Keeping receipts, invoices, and other supporting documents together with your financial records makes it much easier to find information when it's needed.
📊 They support the information recorded in your books.
Your bookkeeping records are based on the information and documentation available. Having proper supporting documents helps make those records more complete and accurate.
And remember—keeping receipts doesn't necessarily mean keeping a shoebox full of paper! 😊 Receipts and invoices can be stored electronically as long as you have an organized system for keeping them accessible.
