Payroll compliance: what every employer must remit.

When you pay employees, you deduct CPP contributions, EI premiums and income tax from each paycheque. You then remit those amounts to the CRA along with your employer share: a CPP contribution equal to what you deducted, plus the employer share of EI premiums.

A few rules to keep in mind:
- Deductions are held in trust, so keep them separate from business funds
- Regular remitters pay by the 15th of the following month; quarterly and accelerated remitters have different schedules
- Keep payroll records for at least six years

GST reminder for quarterly filers.

If your business files GST quarterly on calendar quarters, your July to September 2026 return is due one month after the quarter ends. October 31 is a Saturday this year, so a return and payment received by Monday, November 2, 2026 (the next business day) is on time.

Monthly and annual filers have different due dates. You can check your filing frequency in CRA My Business Account.

Before you file:
- Reconcile your sales and the GST you collected
- Gather receipts for GST paid on business expenses (input tax credits)
- Set aside the amount owing
