The Canadian Home Watch Group proudly recognizes the spirit, diligence, and industriousness of Canadian workers whose efforts help make Canada the great country it is today.

Across our communities and industries, Canadians bring skill, dedication, and a strong work ethic to what they do each day. Their contributions strengthen our businesses, support our communities, and help move our country forward.

This Labour Day, we celebrate the people behind that work and the important role they play across our nation.

From the Canadian Home Watch Group, we wish Canadians from coast to coast to coast a safe, proud, and enjoyable Labour Day.

The Labour Day long weekend always feels like the unofficial end of summer in Canada.

For our team, today is a busy one as we help a number of our clients return home from their summer travels, making sure everything is ready and waiting for them when they arrive. From grocery shopping to arranging travel from the airport, we help handle all of the details!

There’s something special about travelling, exploring and making memories. But there’s also something pretty wonderful about coming home.

Wherever this long weekend finds you, we hope you’re enjoying the final days of summer safely and surrounded by good company.

Happy Labour Day!

Insurance compliance is something homeowners can easily overlook when travelling, but it is important to understand and follow the requirements of your home insurance policy while you are away. The last thing you want is to risk having a claim denied because those requirements were not met.

Before you leave home for an extended period, there’s one important thing worth checking: your homeowners’ insurance policy.

Depending on your coverage, your insurer may require your home to be checked anywhere from every 48 hours to every two weeks while it’s unoccupied. The exact requirement depends on your individual policy.

Know your coverage before you go. Review your policy, understand how frequently your home needs to be checked, and have a plan in place that meets those requirements.

Professional Home Watch provides scheduled, documented visits to unoccupied properties, giving Canadian homeowners a reliable way to have their homes checked while they’re away.

Not sure what your policy requires? Start by reviewing your coverage, then connect with a Professional Home Watch provider to discuss a visit schedule that fits your needs.

When you are getting ready to leave for vacation, you probably have a mental checklist.

Lock the doors. Check the windows. Adjust the thermostat. Take out the garbage.

Here is one more thing worth adding: check what you have left charging.

The Calgary Fire Department recently responded to three lithium-ion battery fires within just 24 hours. Two involved electric scooters that caught fire while charging.

Calgary firefighters have now responded to 21 lithium-ion battery fires in 2026, already more than the 19 reported during all of 2025.

Lithium-ion batteries are not limited to scooters. They power many of the things we use every day, including phones, laptops, cordless tools, vacuums and e-bikes. The percentage of people who have lithium ion batteries in their home could be arguably quite high, so it's an important thing to remember, especially if you're leaving town for a few days.

As a general best practice, the Calgary Fire Department recommends unplugging batteries once they are fully charged, not leaving batteries unattended while charging, using compatible charging equipment and watching for signs of swelling, damage or overheating.

Our team encourages you to take a few extra minutes to walk through your home and unplug rechargeable devices that do not need to remain connected while you are gone.

For more battery safety information, the Calgary Fire Department has shared additional tips in this video: https://youtu.be/5laB9mtRvZw

Sometimes, protecting it starts with the things you do before you leave. And, our clients know just how many warnings we provide before they leave on their trips. It's always better to be cautious, and prepared.

Have you been planning a trip for some time in the new future?

The Government of Canada has expanded its **online passport renewal service**, making it easier for adult Canadians to renew their passports without visiting a Service Canada Centre or mailing in paperwork.

There are a few important things to keep in mind:
• You must meet the Government of Canada's eligibility requirements to renew online.
• Your passport photo must be submitted digitally and taken by a commercial photographer.
• Once you submit your online renewal application, your current passport is cancelled and can no longer be used for travel.
• Online renewals follow the standard 20-business-day processing time, plus mailing time, so it's important to plan ahead.
• Renewed passports cannot currently be mailed outside of Canada.

From renewing passports to preparing your home before you leave, a little planning now can make for a much smoother departure. Especially if your passport is expiring soon. Many countries can, and do, deny access if your passport expiry is within three months, regardless of how long your trip is intended to be.

If you're thinking about planning a trip, your passport is definitely something that should be considered.

For eligibility requirements and to renew online, visit the Government of Canada's passport renewal page. Here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-passports/renew-adult-passport.html

- Five minutes today could save you thousands tomorrow. -

Homeownership comes with a long list of responsibilities, and while major repairs often make the headlines, it's usually the small problems that become expensive when they go unnoticed.

Taking just a few minutes to walk through your home can help identify issues before they turn into costly repairs.

Here are a few simple things worth checking today:
• Look under sinks for signs of leaks or moisture.
• Check your hot water tank for any signs of corrosion or water around the base.
• Replace or inspect your furnace or HVAC filter if it's due.
• Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
• Walk around the outside of your home and look for cracked caulking, damaged siding, or anything that doesn't look quite right.
• Make sure your outdoor taps and irrigation systems aren't leaking.
• Listen for any unusual sounds coming from your furnace, air conditioner, or other mechanical equipment.

Small maintenance tasks like these can often prevent much larger problems down the road. Those larger problems are never cheap!

And if you are ever in need of a hand with those househod repairs, or more, we offer handyman services through Acuity Advantage, to help with anything you might need.
