Earlier this month, Dan had the opportunity to support some of Ontario's elite basketball players at an Ontario Basketball championship tournament. A huge thank you to Deepan Vigneswaran, Ontario Basketball's Chief Operating Officer for allowing Dan this opportunity.

An avid basketball fan, Dan thoroughly enjoyed the game, the atmosphere and the added bonus of presenting the winning team's medals. The tournament signage - 'Where Elite Meet' - was an understatement for the talent of both teams.

As a wealth management practice, we deal with money everyday. Not actual dollar bills, mind you - but money nonetheless. So in thinking of what to post to honour women for International Women's Day, we thought of a woman we see in our wallets from time to time but we might not know her story:

Viola Desmond built a career and business as a beautician and was a mentor to young Black women in Nova Scotia through her Desmond School of Beauty Culture. In 1946, Viola Desmond challenged racial discrimination when she refused to leave the segregated whites-only section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Viola Desmond was arrested, jailed overnight and convicted without legal representation for an obscure tax offence as a result. Despite the efforts of the Nova Scotian Black community to assist her appeal, Viola Desmond was unable to remove the charges against her and went unpardoned in her lifetime. Desmond’s courageous refusal to accept an act of racial discrimination provided inspiration to later generations of Black persons in Nova Scotia and in the rest of Canada. In 2010, Lieutenant-Governor Maryann Francis issued Desmond a free pardon. In December 2016, the Bank of Canada announced that Viola Desmond would be the first Canadian woman to be featured by herself on the face of a banknote — the $10 note released on 19 November 2018. Tax season has begun. You can get all the documents you need for filing your return in your IG Online Tax Centre:

🔎 Within the Tax Centre, you'll find tax receipts (for up to the last seven years), as well as Realized Gain/Loss and Annual Statement of Advisory Fees reports (2021 to 2025). All documents are easily downloaded for printing.

🔎 Tax documents for the 2025 tax year will be posted in the Tax Centre as they become available between now and the end of March. The tax filing deadline for individuals is April 30, 2026, and for self-employed individuals, June 15, 2026.

Please note that certain tax documents will not be available in the Tax Centre:

🔎 RDSP tax slips and IES and AIS income summary documents for U.S. taxpayers will continue to be delivered to clients through existing channels.

Dan kicked off the new year at The Economic Club of Canada's annual Economic Outlook Breakfast where the Chief Economists of Canada's major banks discussed the current state of the economy and predictions for the year ahead. Moderated by CTV News Network host, Vassy Kapelos, this annual flagship event provides insight on the trends and challenges shaping Canada's future.

Following the breakfast meeting, it was off to IG's Toronto head office where IG's Chief Economist Philip Petursson provided further insight on the discussion takeaways and how the trends will impact our clients and services.

Events like this keep Dan and the S&A team better informed and ready to hit the ground running in 2026.
