CRA wins court battle after it says salesperson wrote off too many expenses

Jamie Golombek: CRA characterized taxpayer's Amway business as 'a hobby with a business flair'

Now that we made it through April 30 and did all we could to meet the deadlines for everyone who had things in before our cut off date we are exhausted. We have worked every day for the last 3 weeks without a day off, and the last several days have been 13-14 hour days in the office until almost 11pm. It's time for a rest. Mentally and physically.

CRA provided many obstacles this year that need to be dealt with still and we have lists and rest assured we will continue to follow up. There are still taxes in our office to be done and they will be.
That said, we need a break. There was a time before COVID that we took the first week of May for vacation. Many of you have recognized the insanity of this year and asked us about a vacation after April 30. That's not an option this year, but we do need a couple of days so we are taking a long weekend.

The office will be closed from 3:30pm today Thursday and will reopen on Tuesday morning. If you have things to drop off, please either wait until next week or drop in the box at the house. There are NO pick ups over these days from anywhere.

Those of you who are receiving documents late in the mail or from CRA can send us an email to [email protected] and we will reply next week. Adjustmemts can be made to your return before CRA reassesses you, at a cost of $30. It's better for you to catch things before CRA does! We have made every effort to complete your returns with all the information available both with what you provided as well as what was available on CRA at the time. If it was obvious that something was missing we told you. In the past we may not have charged to do an adjusment but the sheer volume this year means we have to cover the cost of our time to prepare the paperwork and file the adjustment.

Emily and I thank you all for your patience this year as things have progressed slowly with CRA and created a difficult year. Haddon Financial will be preparing a letter send to our re-elected MP outlining the fairly substantial issues that have been steadily growing with CRA and how our tax system is working, or not working for tax payers to file annual returns correctly and on time.

Thanks to all our clients for the ongoing support and referrals! See you next week.

As we push through the changes and incomplete information this year, we are coming to the point where we need to put our own deadline in place. Returns are taking longer this year for all kind of reasons beyond our control.

IF YOU WANT TO GET FILED BY THE APRIL 30 DEADLINE PLEASE HAVE YOUR INFO INTO US AT THE OFFICE OR DROP BOX BY THIS FRIDAY AT 5PM. AS ALWAYS YOU CAN EMAIL US AT [email protected]

Anything we receive after that will be a best effort by us to get you done by the deadline. If you are self employed your filing deadline is June 15, but if you owe you still owe it by April 30.

We are in the office Mon-Fri 10-5 for in person drop offs at 21 Holland St W and the drop box at the house is available 24/7 at 59 Fortis Cres.

Clearing up something that seems to come up every year! When you are separated or divorced and have children there are important things to know.
1. If you are separated you MUST be living at a different address than your former partner. If you are not, CRA will always include the partners income when calculating the Child Tax Benefit.
2. When you are separated or divorced with children and NOT living with a new partner you can claim one of your children as "equivalent to spouse". There is a significant tax benefit to this. You can't claim 2 children as equivalent to spouse because you are only allowed one spouse.
3. When getting your separation or divorce agreement push your lawyer to include details about which of you will claim the children and be specific.
4. Once you cohabitate or marry a new partner you must file as married or common law and your partner becomes your spouse and your child can no longer fill that roll. If your new partner is working you wont get the same tax benefit as you did from your child and your refund will go down.

Trying to file otherwise is fraud. There are penalties for both you and I if we try to manipulate the system.
