What many Canadians don't realize is that CPP and OAS benefits are taxable.

One of the most common issues I see as a tax preparer is retirees receiving these benefits for years without realizing they must request tax deductions from their payments. If they don't, they can end up owing a significant amount when they file their tax return—a stressful and unwelcome surprise.

Seniors aren't living lavishly on CPP and OAS. They're simply covering their basic expenses month to month. In my view, these benefits should not be taxed.

I've signed this petition and hope you'll consider signing it too.

For context, in 2026 the average new CPP recipient at age 65 receives about $925 per month, while the maximum CPP benefit is $1,507.65. OAS pays up to $743.05 per month for those aged 65–74 and up to $817.36 for those 75 and older.
