Bangladesh Bank has introduced novel provisions enabling banks to provide loans in taka to non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) for legitimate purposes, thereby expanding financial support.

This decision significantly enhances NRBs' financial flexibility, acknowledging their substantial contributions to the national economy through remittances. Previously, section 5(1)(a) of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947 required prior Bangladesh Bank approval for credit to non-residents. While housing finance was already permitted under the Guidelines for Foreign Exchange Transactions- 2018.

This policy simplifies credit access through direct bank-client relationships. Eligible NRBs must be regular remitters via official channels, with loan amounts capped at Tk10 lakh or the necessary sum. Loan repayments must be made from inward remittances. Banks must adhere to standard credit norms and due diligence.

This directive aims to facilitate NRB access to genuine loans, promote formal remittance channels, and strengthen economic ties between NRBs and Bangladesh, contributing to financial inclusivity.
