If you’re not eligible for Medicare, you might be able to claim the Medicare levy exemption

To claim the exemption, you’ll need to submit a Medicare Entitlement Statement. It details the period during a financial year that you weren’t eligible for Medicare.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will decide if you need to pay the Medicare levy.

You can apply by:

👉 using the Medicare Entitlement Statement dashboard in the Individual Healthcare Identifiers service through myGov, or

👉 lodging a Medicare Entitlement Statement online application.

NSW Community Services Industry (CSI) Portable Long Service Leave — Key Dates to Know

From 1 July 2025, NSW will commence a portable long service leave scheme for the Community Services Industry (CSI). This is designed to better reflect how community services work is often delivered across multiple employers over time.

Here’s the timeline:

✔️1 July 2025: Scheme starts in NSW.
From 1 July 2025: NSW employers with at least one CSI worker must register with the Long Service Corporation and start recording worker service.
✔️1 July – 31 December 2025: The foundation period for the first two service returns. Workers included in these returns receive an automatic foundation worker bonus of 365 days’ service credits.
✔️From April 2026: Employers begin lodging service returns and levy payments, covering the first three quarters (9 months).
From April 2026: Provisions relating to worker registrations take effect.
📢Call to action: If you’re a CSI employer in NSW, make sure you’re ready to register and record service from 1 July 2025. If you’re a worker, keep an eye on how your service is recorded across employers.

**NSW Community Services Industry Portable Long Service Leave Scheme**

The NSW Government has introduced a new portable long service leave scheme for community services workers, commencing 1 July 2025. This groundbreaking initiative addresses a longstanding issue faced by workers in the sector who frequently move between employers and struggle to accumulate the traditional 10 years of continuous service required for long service leave.

Under the Community Services Industry (CSI) scheme, workers become eligible for long service leave after just 7 years of industry service across one or more employers. Eligible workers can claim up to 6 weeks' paid leave based on ordinary wages, with the flexibility to take it progressively rather than all at once. Workers appearing on the first two service returns will receive a foundation worker bonus of 365 days of service credits.

The scheme is funded through a quarterly levy paid by eligible employers and self-employed contractors who opt in. Employers with community services workers must register with the Long Service Corporation from 1 July 2025, with levy payments due from April 2026. This portable scheme complements, rather than replaces, existing long service leave entitlements under the Long Service Leave Act 1955.

From 1 July 2025, the NSW Government will implement a new Community Services Industry portable long service leave scheme (CSI scheme), designed to support workers in the community services sector who often change employers due to the nature of their work.

ATO Steps Up Airport Enforcement on Unpaid Tax Debts

The Australian Taxation Office has intensified its debt-recovery strategy, issuing 21 Departure Prohibition Orders (DPOs) since July 2025—already exceeding the total for the entire 2024–25 financial year. The initiative targets taxpayers with the capacity to pay who are deliberately avoiding settlement, particularly where there is a risk of leaving Australia to evade liabilities.

DPOs can apply to any taxpayer and are driven by debt levels and behaviour, not occupation or industry. Outstanding debts commonly include unpaid employee superannuation, PAYG withholding, and GST collected but not remitted—often linked to business or property activities.

The ATO has reinforced that DPOs form part of a broader enforcement toolkit, alongside Director Penalty Notices, garnishee actions, credit reporting referrals, and wind-up applications. Assistant Commissioner Anita Challen underscored community expectations, noting that employee super obligations must be prioritised ahead of discretionary spending such as overseas travel.

The message is clear: attempts to depart Australia without addressing significant tax debts carry serious and immediate consequences, including being stopped at the airport prior to boarding.

The ATO is launching a shock campaign to recover $50 billion owed to public coffers - and they have property owners in their sights.

Plan & Prepare

January is the foundation month for the year ahead.

Before the year gains momentum, now is the time to step back and plan with intention. Locking in key tax, BAS, and business dates early provides clarity over your capacity and helps prevent last-minute pressure later in the year.

A well-structured calendar supports better compliance, smoother cash flow planning, and stronger decision-making.

Start your 2026 planning early — clarity now prevents pressure later.
Plan early. Stay compliant. Grow with confidence.
