When it comes to investing, sometimes the idea of “taking profits” makes sense — but it’s worth thinking about the bigger picture too.

👉 Imagine you own 1,000 shares in a company. Yesterday they were worth $1 each, today they’re worth $1.20. Your portfolio has grown from $1,000 to $1,200 — and you still hold the same 1,000 shares, all continuing to pay dividends 💵.

If you sell 200 shares just to lock in the gain, you now have fewer shares working for you. That can mean less income and less growth potential down the track.

Often, a sustainable approach is to let your portfolio keep working, drawing on dividends and distributions first, and only selling down gradually when it’s part of the long-term plan 🌱.

Everyone’s situation is different, but it’s a helpful way to look at how profits and income can interact over time.

A recent study of 17 super funds covering around 16 million accounts found something pretty striking:

📈 People who actively 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 how their super was invested had much higher balances than those who stayed in the default MySuper option.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭:
• 𝐁𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 – $313,000 (active choice) vs $110,000 (MySuper)
• 𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝟕𝟎–𝟕𝟒 – $329,981 vs $95,547 (344% difference)
• 𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝟓𝟎+ – $258,000 vs $144,000

The report, from super research firm Borromean Consulting, doesn’t claim that switching options alone causes higher returns – but it shows that engagement matters.

People who make active choices about their super tend to:
• Contribute more (e.g. salary sacrifice)
• Seek financial advice
• Review their investments
• Make better use of tax and retirement strategies

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲? Getting involved in your super early can make a massive difference down the track.

If you’ve never looked at your investment mix or aren’t sure where to start – we’re here to help.

Team Lunch Celebrations 🎉

Yesterday we came together for a lovely lunch to farewell Narelle as she heads off on her next adventure — helping her husband in his business. Narelle, we’ll miss your presence and support!

We also managed to surprise both Chris and Luke with a birthday cake after lunch (Luke's on the 18th and Chris's on the 20th of July).

A great excuse to celebrate!

Wrapped up the week with a bit of fun!

The Shanley team took on an Escape Room (we even made the podium! 🏆) last Friday and followed it up with a well-earned EOFY/New FY lunch 🍽️.

Great way to close out the week and kick off the new financial year – resetting, recharging, and celebrating together.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has made a significant move by cutting interest rates for the first time in over four years, reducing the cash rate from 4.35% to 4.10% in February 2025. This decision offers welcome relief to mortgage holders, and with the possibility of further rate cuts later this year, many are now considering how to make the most of this change.
