You won't believe what people try to claim at tax time πŸ˜‚

And before you ask - yes, these are all real.

A real estate agent who wanted $30,000 for dental veneers. A truck driver claiming swimming trunks. Monthly salon haircuts because "hair grows during business hours." A fashion manager trying to write off $10,000 in designer clothes. An engagement ring. A luxury yacht.

The ATO has seen it all and they publish this stuff. Seriously.

The rule is simple, if it's not directly related to earning your income, it's not claimable. And with the ATO's data matching more powerful than ever in 2026, the chances of getting away with it are about as slim as claiming your Netflix subscription.

When in doubt, just ask us. That's what we're here for, we know the rules and how to apply them correctly.

Payday Super is coming. Are you ready?

From 1 July 2026, employers will need to pay super at the same time as wages, not quarterly. Contributions must reach the employee's fund within 7 business days of payday. This is a significant shift, particularly for small businesses that have relied on quarterly payments to manage cash flow.

Now is the time to review your payroll systems, speak with your software provider, and start planning for the change. If you're unsure how this affects your business, we're here to talk it through.

When Tony Vidray founded AV Chartered Accountants in Newcastle in 2012, the goal was simple - build a firm that actually puts clients first 🀝

After 22 years in the industry, he'd seen what was missing. Not the technical expertise β€” but the communication, the tailored advice, the feeling that your accountant genuinely gets your business.

That's what AV is built on.

We offer the full suite - income tax, tax planning, estate planning, superannuation, business valuations and more. But where we're different is how we deliver it.

When your business wins, so do we!

Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Which Services Are Affected - And Which Are not

Not everything we do is covered by the new AML/CTF laws. How to tell the difference.

One of the most common questions clients are asking right now is Does this affect everything my accountant does for me? The answer is no.

Understanding the distinction is the single most useful thing you can do to prepare for what is coming.

We've seen and heard it all 😬

After 22 years in the industry, very little surprises us anymore. But every tax time, without fail, a few classics make an appearance.

No judgement - we've seen worse. But if any of this sounds familiar, now is a very good time to give us a call.

Tick tock. Here's what should be on your radar before 30 June πŸ“‹

πŸ“Œ Super payments - contributions need to clear by 30 June to claim this financial year's deduction. Don't leave it to the last minute, bank processing takes days.

πŸ“Œ Instant asset write-off - the $20,000 threshold expires 30 June. The asset must be installed and ready to use by then (ordered doesn't count).

πŸ“Œ Bad debts - if you have invoices that are genuinely unrecoverable, write them off before 30 June to claim the deduction.

πŸ“Œ Reconcile your books - every transaction from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 needs to be recorded and clean before you can lodge anything.

πŸ“Œ Payday Super starts 1 July - if your payroll system isn't ready, you're already behind.

One month is enough time to get this right. But only if you start now. If any of this feels like a lot, let's talk πŸ“©

We love Dave. Dave is a legend.

But "I reckon you can claim that" is not tax advice and it's definitely not worth the risk when the taxman comes knocking.

The ATO actually called this out directly this year, warning small business owners to stop relying on mates and social media for tax guidance. Because when it goes wrong, Dave's not the one who has to fix it.

Reach out to us for some real advice before you take Dave's word for it.
