๐ณ Heads up: The ATO is saying goodbye to credit cards
From 1 December 2026, you'll no longer be able to pay your tax bill with a credit card. Credit card payments are still accepted up until 30 November 2026.
Why the change?
The RBA's ban on card surcharges came into effect on 1 October. Rather than absorb merchant fees, the ATO has decided to stop accepting credit cards altogether.
Who does this affect?
โ
Anyone who pays BAS, PAYG instalments or income tax by credit card
โ
Anyone with an ATO payment plan linked to a credit card โ you'll need to switch before your next instalment due after 30 November, or your plan could fall into arrears or default
โ
Businesses that use a credit card to manage cash flow around tax due dates
What should you do now?
๐น Check how you currently pay the ATO
๐น Update any payment plan linked to a credit card
๐น Plan your cash flow for upcoming BAS and tax payments
๐น Look at alternatives such as BPAY, direct debit or bank transfer
Not sure how this affects your business or payment plan? The team at North Coast Accounting can help you get ahead of it.
