One of the largest privately owned and operated financial services firms in North Queensland, with 5 offices across QLD. The Carey Group had its foundations back in 1951 when Brian Carey first joined the accounting and audit practice of Larry Kelly in Ingham, taking over the management of the firm. Brian was joined by his eldest sons, John and Robert, and the company was renamed BJ Carey and Compa

ny and continued to grow. In 2002, the Townsville Office was opened as well as the introduction of Financial Planning and Self-managed Super Fund Administration services. The firm began to trade under the names of Carey Accountants, Carey Financial and Strategic SMSF from 2006 on wards. In early 2016 the firm completed a restructure and commenced operating as the Carey Group of Companies, offering services in Accounting, Audit, Financial Planning, SMSF and Business Services. In September 2017, the firm acquired Shirvington Partners with offices located in Cairns and Malanda, extending its presence throughout Northern Queensland. In 2019 the newly renovated Townsville office opened, which is now the central point of the Carey Group company, housing staff from all of our teams. This year also saw Matt Thomson join the firm as CEO & Managing Partner. We celebrated our 70th year in business in 2021, as well as more growth within the company. Carey Thomson Consulting was established to offer Business Advisory services, and our new Brisbane office officially opened. Carey Group also had two new mergers in 2021, the first being with Indigo Financial Services. Indigo staff now work with our financial planning team in our Townsville office. Towards the end of 2021, Barrier Reef Accounting also merged with Carey Group. Barrier Reef Accounting’s partner Greg Stanton was introduced as a Carey Group partner, and his team now works in Cairns, broadening our exposure in Far North Queensland. The current firm not only continues the family business tradition, but seeks to provide the expertise and technical infrastructure of a contemporary accounting and financial services firm, while still maintaining the traditional values of personalised service and advice to its diverse client base.

Last night, Peter joined a panel at JCU hosted by JCU Business Student Association, sharing his insights and experiences with students alongside other industry professionals.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with students and be part of honest conversations about career pathways, industry expectations, and life after university. These events play an important role in helping students feel more prepared and confident as they take their next steps.

With the Richmond Field Days & Races just over a week away, Carey Group is proud to be a Gold Sponsor of this important regional event.

As part of our annual pre‑end of financial year tax planning, our team will be travelling from Townsville across western Queensland throughout the week leading up to the event, spending time on the ground with our existing clients and regional communities.

Accounting Partner Nikeeta Guazzo and Harry Hobbs will be attending the Richmond Field Day and Races as part of this regional visit, and we’re looking forward to connecting with clients, local businesses and producers along the way. Meet the Team: Jarrod Camer

Say hello to Jarrod, one of the friendly faces in our accounting team.

Jarrod joined Carey Group as an Accountant Trainee while completing his accounting degree at James Cook University, and has since stepped into his role full-time after graduating. He works closely with Anita and Peter as he continues to build his skills and experience.

Outside of work, Jarrod is a passionate sportsman. He has played cricket for Norths Cricket Club Townsville since he was young, representing Northern Queensland Country and the Under 23 North Queensland team. He also plays soccer for Burdekin FC and is currently the A Grade goalkeeper.

We’re proud to have Jarrod as part of the team and look forward to seeing where his career takes him.

Recognising five year milestones at Carey Group

Today, we are pleased to recognise Russell Nuss and Louise Previtera, who both celebrate five years with Carey Group.

Five years represents commitment, growth and the relationships built over time, and Russ and Louise have each made valued contributions through their professionalism, teamwork and the way they support both colleagues and clients.

We are also looking forward to celebrating two more five‑year milestones later this month. Beth Fowler will mark five years with Carey Group on 15 June, followed by Rachel Esguerra on 16 June. Each of these milestones reflects the dedication and consistency that underpin our team.

Congratulations to Russ and Louise on reaching this milestone today, and to Beth and Rachel as they celebrate later this month.

We’re proud to continue our long‑standing sponsorship of Teachers West Rugby Union Club and our support of a local club that brings people together through sport.
