From 1 July 2026, Payday Super changes how every Australian employer manages super.

Here's what you need to know:

👉 Super gets paid every payday. Not quarterly. It must be paid alongside wages and reach employee funds within 7 business days.

👉 Cash flow will look different. Instead of 4 super payments a year, some businesses will be making 26 or even 52. That quarterly buffer disappears.

👉 Your payroll systems need to be ready. If you're running super through spreadsheets or manual processes, now is the time to sort that out.

👉 The ATO's free clearing house is closing. The SBSCH closes on 1 July 2026. If that's what you're currently using, you'll need an alternative before then.

👉 Timing rules are getting stricter. It's not just about when you pay, it's about when the money actually reaches your employee's fund.

👉 The businesses that start preparing now will feel this change very differently to those that don't. If you're not sure where to start, we're here to help.

Most businesses have heard that Payday Super is changing when super gets paid. But there’s more to it than that. Some super calculations are changing too, which may affect businesses with:

• salary sacrifice arrangements
• bonuses
• variable pay
• more complex payroll setups

Super will also be calculated every payday instead of quarterly, meaning payroll systems will need to get super calculations right every single pay run.

Another change flying under the radar is the current quarterly super threshold moving to an annual threshold instead. This may particularly affect:

• higher-income employees
• bonus payments
• irregular pay structures

And if your payroll still relies heavily on spreadsheets or manual processes, it’s probably worth reviewing before July 2026.
Payday Super is shaping up to be much bigger than just a payroll update. Now is a good time to review:
✔ payroll systems
✔ super calculations
✔ salary sacrifice arrangements
✔ cash flow planning

The businesses that prepare early are likely to make this transition a whole lot smoother.

SMSFs can offer a lot of flexibility and control, but they also come with rules that need to be taken seriously.

And when it comes to compliance, “close enough” usually isn’t the standard the ATO is looking for.

Things like:
• charging market value rent
• keeping proper documentation
• meeting pension minimums
• and staying on top of trustee obligations

…can all become important very quickly, especially around EOFY.

A lot of SMSF issues don’t come from people intentionally doing the wrong thing. Usually it’s small things that were overlooked or misunderstood over time. That’s why regular reviews and good advice can make such a big difference.

A lot of people assume SMSFs are only for people with huge super balances or complicated investment portfolios. But for many Australians, the appeal is actually much simpler than that. It’s about having more control.

More flexibility around investments. More visibility over where your super is going. And the ability to build a retirement strategy that actually aligns with your goals and lifestyle.

Of course, with that control also comes responsibility, which is why getting the right advice and support matters.

At Think Big, we help clients with:

• SMSF setup
• administration & compliance
• pension funds
• borrowing strategies
• estate planning
• tax strategies
• and ongoing SMSF support

Whether you’re starting from scratch or already have an SMSF in place, we’re always happy to talk things through.

The Federal Budget has introduced some pretty major changes that could affect business owners, investors, and anyone planning ahead financially.

In our May newsletter, we broke down some of the biggest updates, including:

• changes to Capital Gains Tax
• negative gearing updates
• Payday Super
• superannuation changes
• trust distribution changes
• and what these updates could actually mean in practice

There’s a lot to unpack, but understanding these changes early gives you more options and more time to plan properly.

We’ve linked the newsletter in the comments if you’d like to have a read 👇
