Most business owners only look at the bank balance. The real decisions live in what's coming next.

A 13-week cash flow forecast is the single most useful tool a trades business can run β€” it shows you, week by week, when money comes in and when it goes out.

Here's how to build one in an afternoon:
● List every dollar coming in β€” every current job, what's owed and when it's due (deposits, progress claims, retentions)
● List every dollar going out β€” wages, materials, fuel, plant hire, insurance, loan repayments, BAS, super β€” in the week it actually leaves the account
● Net it off, week by week β€” a negative week is a problem you can solve now, not discover later
● Update it every Monday β€” 20 minutes to keep it honest

It's not about a perfect spreadsheet. It's a habit that keeps you ahead of the money instead of chasing it.

If you're doing building or construction work, a standard invoice isn't your only option.

Security of Payment laws in every Australian state let you serve a formal payment claim and, if it's ignored, move straight to adjudication β€” a fast-track dispute process that skips the courts entirely.

The rules differ by state, so know yours:
● VIC (from 15 April 2026): payment terms capped at 20 business days, claim window extended from 3 to 6 months, and you can now claim release of retention money directly
● NSW: payment claims to a head contractor are due within 10 business days for residential work, 20 for non-residential
● QLD: commercial building contracts are capped at 15 business days

The key is serving the claim correctly β€” identify the work, state the amount, and note it's made under the relevant Act. Get that right and the clock starts ticking on the other party, not you.

Not sure where you stand? We help trades businesses navigate this every day β€” get in touch.

Scope creep is a cash flow leak, not a scheduling problem.

Every change of mind that costs you time should cost the client money β€” in writing, before the work starts.

A few rules that protect you:
● Get it in writing before the work starts, not after
● Name the change, the extra cost, and get a signature or a written reply
● No signature, no extra work β€” a verbal "yeah go ahead" doesn't pay the bills

It's a five-minute habit that saves hours of chasing money for work you already did. More cash flow tips landing through September.

The fastest way to get paid faster? Send the invoice before you leave site.

Clients prioritise recent invoices. A job you finished two weeks ago just doesn't feel urgent to them anymore β€” even if it's exactly the same amount owing.

A few habits that make a real difference:
● Invoice from site β€” same day, ideally before you pack up
● Keep terms short and clear β€” Net 7 for residential, Net 30 only for large commercial jobs
● Put the due date in bold and add a payment link or PayID so paying takes seconds
● Chase at 7 days overdue, not 30 β€” most late payments are oversight, not avoidance

Every day between finishing a job and issuing the invoice is a day of free financing you're handing your client.

If your business is profitable on paper but you're still checking the bank balance every other day, you're not alone.

Construction accounts for around 27% of all company insolvencies in Australia β€” more than any other sector. And it's almost never a demand problem. It's a cash flow problem: businesses doing great work, just not getting paid for it fast enough.

2026 made it worse β€” tax debt disclosures for construction businesses spiked 49% in Q1, diesel jumped around 41% in a single month, rising interest rates made holding work-in-progress more expensive, and the new Payday Super rules (from 1 July) removed a short-term buffer a lot of builders quietly relied on.

This month's newsletter is our survival guide for trades and construction businesses β€” invoicing that actually gets you paid faster, getting variations signed, your Security of Payment rights, how to build a 13-week cash flow forecast, and the habits that compound. We'll be sharing a tip a week throughout September.

Get in touch and we'll help you take control of the money side of your business.
