🚜No two farming businesses are the same.

Seasonal conditions, commodity prices, rainfall, input costs and succession planning all create a unique set of challenges for agricultural businesses.

That's why good accounting is about much more than preparing financial statements.
Whether you're looking at purchasing machinery, expanding your operation, planning for the next generation or simply navigating another unpredictable season, having sound financial advice can make a real difference.

If someone asked where you want your business to be this time next year, what would your answer be?

For many business owners, the focus is on getting through the week. The months quickly pass, and before long another financial year has come and gone.

Some questions worth asking are:
✔️ What are your revenue goals?
✔️ Is your pricing still right?
✔️ Are you planning to employ more staff?
✔️ What investments will help your business grow?
✔️ How will you manage cash flow?

Whatever success looks like for you, having a plan makes it much easier to get there.

More sales. Longer hours. Bigger turnover.

They all sound like signs of success. Right?

But here's the question we often ask business owners: Has your profit actually improved?

Growth is exciting, but it doesn't always translate into a healthier business. Rising costs, tighter margins and increasing overheads can quickly absorb higher revenue.

Being busier is one thing. Building a more profitable business is another.

A tax return tells you where your business has been. Good advice helps you decide where it's going.

One of the most rewarding parts of our job isn't preparing tax returns. It's helping clients make confident decisions before they invest, employ, expand or change direction.

Those conversations might involve improving cash flow, reviewing business structures, planning for growth or simply providing another perspective before a major decision is made.

The earlier those conversations happen, the more options there usually are.

You may have seen reports about a new $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses.

Here's the important part:
❌ It does not apply to your current 2025–26 tax return.

The new measure is scheduled to commence from the 2026–27 income year, meaning it won't affect tax returns lodged this year.

If you're claiming work-related expenses, you'll need to ensure your claims are eligible and that you have the appropriate records where required.

"Can we pay the ATO a bit later?"

It's something we occasionally hear from business owners when cash flow is tight.
While there may be times when payment arrangements are unavoidable, it's important to understand that the cost of paying the ATO late has increased.

General Interest Charges (GIC) and Shortfall Interest Charges (SIC) incurred from the 2025-26 income year are no longer tax deductible. That means late payment doesn't just attract interest, it also removes a tax benefit businesses previously received.

Good cash flow planning has never been more important. If you're concerned about meeting upcoming tax obligations, it's always better to have the conversation early and explore your options before the interest starts adding up.

If you employ staff, there are a few important changes worth keeping on your radar.

✔️ Payday Super means super contributions now need to be paid much sooner, generally reaching employees' super funds within seven business days of payday.
✔️ The ATO has strengthened security around online super transfers and consolidations by introducing an additional verification step.
✔️ Interest charged by the ATO is no longer tax deductible for General Interest Charges (GIC) and Shortfall Interest Charges (SIC), making late payments more costly than they once were.

Legislation changes regularly, but staying informed now can help avoid unnecessary costs and compliance issues later.

Thinking about purchasing a vehicle for work or your business?

From 1 July 2026, updated tax thresholds apply when calculating depreciation, GST credits and luxury car tax.

If you're planning to purchase or lease a vehicle this financial year, it's worth understanding how these limits may affect your tax position before you sign on the dotted line.

More than likely you will also be required to keep a comprehensive 12 week logbook for your vehicle. Don’t hesitate to contact us to confirm if this is applicable to you.
