Side hustle income? It all adds up 📈

Whether it’s online sales, freelance work, cash jobs, or interest — it all forms part of your taxable income.

The ATO receives data from sources like:
• Banks
• Platforms
• Payment providers

So it’s easier than ever to keep everything aligned.
The simple approach? Keep track of what you earn and include it in your return so everything stays accurate and stress-free.

“It’s only a small extra, it should be fine.”
It’s a common thought, but it’s worth making sure your claims are accurate.

The ATO looks for patterns, not just big issues, such as:
• Deductions that are a bit higher than expected
• Repeated round numbers
• Claims that don’t quite align with your job

It’s less about the amount, and more about whether everything makes sense and is supported.

“Can I claim my car?”

Really, it depends!
✔️ Driving between jobs or to a client = usually yes
❌ Commuting to your regular workplace = no
That’s the line the ATO cares about.

And if you’re claiming:
• Logbook method = more accurate, more admin
• Cents per km = simpler, capped

Car claims are one of the most reviewed areas, so they are worth getting right.

No receipt? Not always game over…
There is a rule, but most people get it wrong.
🧾You can claim up to $300 in work-related expenses without receipts

BUT:
❌ It’s not a free $300
❌ You can’t guess or round up
❌ You still need to explain how you worked it out
⚠️ And it doesn’t cover everything (car + travel rules are different)
💡 If you’re claiming it, you should still have some record such as a bank app or diary.

💸 Donating and getting a tax deduction? Yes… but not always.

Only donations to DGR-registered organisations are claimable, and plenty aren’t.

Quick check:
1.Jump on ABN Lookup
2.Search the organisation
3.Check “Deductible gift recipient status”
✔️ Listed = claim it
❌ “Not entitled” = no deduction

Pro tip: If it’s not on ABN Lookup, it’s not claimable.

📊 Quick EOFY tip!

If you’ve had a stronger year than expected, it might be worth:
• Bringing forward expenses

🚨 Payday Super is coming, and it’s a big shift for employers.
From 1 July 2026, super must be paid every payday, not quarterly.
That means:
• Payments within 7 business days
• More pressure on cash flow
• Changes to your payroll processes

July will be a key transition month, with multiple super payments potentially due at once.

In our latest blog, our expert Wendy breaks down what this means and how to prepare.

Data matching is more advanced than ever, which means accuracy matters.
In most cases:

• Client meals = not deductible
• Gifts = only deductible in limited situations (and may trigger other tax rules)

And yes… the ATO is watching this space closely.
If you’re unsure, it’s worth checking before you include it.

🚨 “Tax hacks” are trending… and the ATO isn’t a fan! If it sounds too good to be true, then it usually is!

The ATO is calling out:

👀 “A mate told me…” tips

This year they’re watching:
• Work-related expenses
• Missing income (yes, side hustles count)

Quick rule: If you didn’t pay for it, can’t prove it, or it’s not work-related, don’t claim it.
