If youโ€™re running a business in Australia, youโ€™ve probably heard of BAS and IAS, but what do they actually mean?

๐—•๐—”๐—ฆ (๐—•๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—”๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜) is a report submitted to the ATO to declare and pay your business taxes, including:
-GST (Goods and Services Tax)
-PAYG withholding (tax withheld from employees)
-Other business tax obligations

BAS is usually lodged monthly or quarterly, depending on your business size and turnover.

๐—œ๐—”๐—ฆ (๐—œ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—”๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜) is similar to BAS, but it generally applies when you are reporting PAYG withholding only and not GST. You may need to lodge an IAS if your PAYG withholding reaches a certain threshold, which can change how often you report.

PAYG withholding thresholds determine how often you report, based on the amount of tax you withhold from employees:
-Small withholder ($25,000 or less): Lodge and pay quarterly
-Medium withholder ($25,001 to $1 million): Lodge and pay monthly
-Large withholder (more than $1 million): Pay electronically within 6โ€“8 days of each withholding event

As your business grows, you may move from quarterly to monthly reporting.

The Fair Work Commission has announced upcoming changes to Junior wage rates under the Retail, Fast Food, and Pharmacy Awards.

Whatโ€™s changing?
โœ… Employees under the age of 21 covered by these awards are paid a percentage of the adult pay rate for their classification.
โœ… Employees aged 18 to 20 will be entitled to the adult pay rate for their classification if theyโ€™ve been employed by their employer for more than 6 months.
โœ… Junior rates will remain unchanged for employees under 18

The Commission has indicated that these changes will be introduced gradually and changes may begin from 1 December 2026. Further details are still being confirmed as implementation arrangements continue [fairwork.gov.au]

For NT, QLD, SA, TAS and VIC, itโ€™s business as usual.
