The ASX 200 gained 33 points last week. In the same five days, the market roughly doubled the odds of an RBA rate rise next month.

Only one of those two facts will still matter in six months.

Wednesday's inflation print ran hot. Headline prices rose 1.0% on the month against 0.8% expected, and core inflation rose 0.5%, its biggest monthly increase in a year. The odds of a September hike jumped from 17% to 36%. Markets now price a 94% chance of at least one increase by February.

The annual rate did fall, to 3.5% from 3.8%. But it fell because a large number from last year dropped out of the calculation, not because anything improved. Base effects flatter. Monthly momentum tells you what is actually happening, and that is the number the Board watches.

There was a second signal. Beneath Friday's rally, more ASX 300 stocks fell than rose even as the index closed at its high. A market where the index climbs while most stocks decline is not a market expressing confidence.

Two healthcare results, three days apart, priced on opposite logic.

CSL reported a US$2.6 billion statutory loss and rose 23.3% for the week, its best single session in more than two decades. Moderna reported a Phase 3 melanoma result carrying no revenue at all and closed one session up 125.9%, its best day on record.

Both moves were rational. Only one of them is repeatable.

CSL's rally was never about the loss. The US$7.1 billion of impairments behind it were non cash, and operating cash flow held at US$3.5 billion. Investors read past the headline to the arithmetic underneath it. Moderna's rally was the reverse: a heavily shorted stock down roughly 90% from its Covid peak, where one binary outcome went the right way. It now trades around 70% above the average analyst target.

Underneath both, the ASX 200 closed at 9,058.9, down 0.6% for the week, and US 30 year yields hit their highest level since 2007.

A consumer crunch is brewing.

Four Australian companies reported inside six days. Read one at a time, none looks alarming. Read together, they describe a household sector under real pressure.

JB Hi-Fi posted record FY26 sales of $11.06 billion and lifted its full year dividend 22.5%, then disclosed July comparable sales negative across all three brands.

SEEK's national job ads fell 6.0% over the year, and applications per job ad are at the highest level on record. Management put it down to the economy, not to AI.

NAB's mortgage applications fell 15% in a single quarter. Its economists now expect housing credit growth of 2.5% in FY27, down from 6.7%.

Job ads are a flow measure. The unemployment rate is a stock measure. Flows turn first.

The RBA held at 4.35% on 11 August and is still focused on inflation risk. The ABS labour force print on Thursday 20 August is what settles it.

One central bank held. The other had its next move repriced.

The RBA left the cash rate at 4.35% on Tuesday, unanimously, and kept further tightening on the table. Two days later softer US inflation cut the odds of a September Fed hike below 40%, without the Fed meeting at all.

The ASX 200 closed at 9,115.2, down 1.6% and its weakest week since April. Banks were sold on the detail inside their results, miners after an eight session run, and both flows landed in technology.

A 1.6% fall is not the story. Where the money went is.

Brent crude closed above US$100 for the first time since May.

Houthi strikes on two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea pushed oil up 17.9% in five sessions. The Nasdaq fell 2.1% as the largest US technology names shed close to US$800 billion in a single session — this time on the cost of AI capital expenditure rather than any earnings miss.

Closer to home, the ASX 200 finished at 8,772.3, down 0.3% for the week. Energy rose 5.9% and Karoon Energy led the index with a 19.3% gain, while information technology fell 6.6% and healthcare 5.7%.

Australia refines very little of its own fuel. A crude move of this size does not stay in the commodities pages — it arrives as freight, diesel, airfares and groceries, and it lands the same week the June-quarter inflation print does.

Brent crude surged 11%. The Nasdaq fell 2.9%. The ASX closed flat, and that flat close is the most interesting number of the three.
Beneath it: miners sold off hard, defensives and energy quietly re-rated, and the market began repricing what an oil shock means for the RBA's next move.

In December 2023 we took a position in a copper growth note. Sixteen months in, it was barely above water. It matured in December 2025 at 126% on cash, from a 38.6% move in the metal. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. The full story, including the uncomfortable middle, is on our insights page, link in bio. A new copper growth note is being finalised now. Wholesale clients only. General information only, not personal advice.

Every AI data centre is built on copper.
South Korea has just committed more than US$880bn to chips and AI data centres, and the same build-out is under way across the US, the Gulf and Asia. Whoever wins the AI race, they are all buying the same metal.
The numbers: an AI facility draws up to five times the copper per megawatt of a conventional data centre. Existing and planned mines can meet only about 70% of projected 2035 demand (IEA). A new copper mine takes more than a decade to permit and build.
We are preparing a copper growth note for wholesale investors: exposure to the metal itself, on defined terms, without single-company risk. Register your interest via the link in bio or email [email protected].
Wholesale clients only, as defined in the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth). General information only; not personal advice. Structured notes carry issuer credit risk. Projections are not guarantees.

The ASX 200 closed at 8,844, up 0.9%, with US markets also showing gains due to softer payroll data. Energy supply recovery and an easing inflation headline in Australia are notable, though concerns about underlying inflation remain. Investors are advised to favor assets suited for a prolonged high-rate environment.
