ATO Recoups Over $1 Billion in Unpaid Super – What It Means for Employers
The ATO has clawed back a huge $1.1 billion in unpaid super for almost a million employees in 2024–25, along with $209 million in penalties. That’s a clear sign they’re serious about making sure workers get what they’re owed.
It took 120,000 reminders, 73,600 prompts, 15,350 audits, and more than 22,000 tougher actions—including nearly 20,000 director penalty notices and 2,800 legal cases—to get there.
With real-time payroll data and Payday Super coming in, the ATO will be able to spot issues faster and act sooner.
For employers, the message is simple: paying super isn’t just about staying out of trouble. It’s about showing employees you value them and protecting your reputation. Staying on top of compliance is always easier—and cheaper—than dealing with penalties later.
