🚨 From 1 December 2026, the ATO will stop accepting credit card payments.

So if you normally use a credit card to pay:
• BAS
• Income tax
• PAYG obligations
• ATO debt or instalments
you should start planning another payment method.

💳 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐓𝐎 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧?
This is the important part.
If your payment plan is currently linked to a credit card, you will need to change the payment method before your next instalment due after 30 November 2026.
Otherwise, the payment may not go through as expected.
Other ATO payment methods will still be available.
The ATO has also said it understands some people and businesses use credit cards to help manage cash flow. If the change makes it difficult for you to pay on time, support may be available.

👉 If you currently rely on a credit card for ATO payments, don’t leave this until the end of November.
____________________

💳 Can you offfer a cash or PayID discount?

A lot of business owners have asked us this question recently:
“Can I give customers a discount if they pay by cash or PayID?”
The simple answer is: YES — but the pricing needs to be shown correctly.

Businesses can offer a discount when customers use a particular payment method, such as:
✅ Cash
✅ PayID
✅ Bank transfer
✅ Other accepted payment methods

But the discount must be clearly explained BEFORE the customer chooses to book, order or pay.

For example, this is usually okay:
Coffee: $5.00
Cash / PayID discount: 20 cents
Final price if paying cash / PayID: $4.80

What businesses should NOT do:
❌ Show only the discounted price
❌ Make the discounted price look bigger or more important than the full price
❌ Hide the normal price until the customer pays
❌ Make customers feel misled at checkout

The displayed price should be the full price the customer will pay if they do not receive the discount.

A safer way to display it:
“Full price: $5.00
Discount available for cash or PayID payments.”
This keeps the pricing clearer and helps avoid customer complaints.

Cách ghi an toàn hơn:

🏥 Medicare Levy Exemption: Why You May Only Get a HALF Exemption

Many taxpayers think:
“If I qualify for a Medicare levy exemption, I should get a full exemption.”
But that is not always correct.
The ATO also looks at your dependants, including your spouse.

You may only be entitled to a HALF Medicare levy exemption if you had at least one dependant, for example your spouse, who:
✅ was not in a Medicare levy exemption category, and
✅ did not have to pay the Medicare levy

This can happen where your spouse or dependant has low income and does not have to pay the Medicare levy themselves.

Simple Example:
You may qualify for a medical exemption.
But your spouse is your dependant.
Your spouse is not in an exemption category and does not have to pay Medicare levy because their income is low.
In this case, you may not get a full exemption. You may only get a HALF exemption.

⚠️ Important:
Do not automatically claim a full Medicare levy exemption without checking your spouse and dependant situation.
This area can be confusing, especially for families, couples, new migrants and taxpayers with mixed Medicare eligibility.

💳 You can transfer money from your company to yourself, but how that payment is recorded depends on what the money is for.

A transfer from a private company to a shareholder could, depending on the circumstances, relate to:

✳️ Salary or director fees: payment for work performed.

✳️ Dividend: a distribution made by the company.

✳️ Repayment: money the company already owes.

✳️ Loan: money advanced by the company that may create additional obligations.

For certain payments or loans involving shareholders or their associates, Division 7A may also need to be considered.

In some circumstances, an amount can be treated as an unfranked dividend for tax purposes.

So the question is not only whether the money can be transferred. The company records also need to show what the payment was for.

Franking credits form part of the tax calculation when eligible franked dividends are reported.

Australian companies may pay dividends with franking credits attached, reflecting company tax already paid on the underlying profits.

When the relevant dividend is reported, the assessable income generally includes both the dividend amount and the attached franking credit. The credit is then taken into account in the tax assessment.

This is why a dividend statement may show separate figures for:

* Franked dividend
* Unfranked dividend
* Franking credit

These amounts serve different purposes when the dividend is reported. Eligibility to claim franking credits can also depend on specific rules and circumstances.

—

📄 Employee shares can create a separate tax reporting requirement from ordinary salary and wages.

Under an employee share scheme (ESS), an employee may receive shares, rights or other eligible interests at a discount.

For tax purposes, the relevant amount is generally the discount on the ESS interest, calculated under the rules that apply to the particular scheme. The timing can also differ depending on whether the scheme is taxed upfront or has a deferred taxing point.

Employers generally provide an Employee Share Scheme statement showing the information needed for the tax return.
ESS information reported to the ATO may also appear in myTax and should be checked against the statement received.

The key is identifying which ESS arrangement applies and which amount belongs in the 2025–26 return.

🏥 For 2025–26, AUD 202,000 is the base family income threshold for the Medicare Levy Surcharge.

For couples and families, income for surcharge purposes can take both partners into account. The family threshold can also increase where there are multiple dependent children.

Income is one part of the assessment.

The other key consideration is whether the relevant family members have an appropriate level of private patient hospital cover.

So when the Medicare Levy Surcharge is assessed, the position can depend on a combination of:

• Family income
• Family circumstances
• Hospital cover

The applicable outcome will depend on the circumstances for that income year.

🎓 Amounts withheld from salary for a study loan are not applied to the HELP balance each payday.

When an employer withholds additional amounts because an employee has a study or training support loan, those amounts form part of the tax withheld during the year.

The compulsory repayment itself is calculated when the tax return is processed, based on repayment income. It is then applied to the loan account as part of that assessment process.

For 2025–26, the compulsory repayment system has also changed.

The minimum repayment income is now AUD 67,000, with repayments calculated using the new marginal system. The ATO says most affected borrowers will make a smaller compulsory repayment under the new rules.

This is why the HELP balance may not move throughout the year even though additional amounts are being withheld from each pay.

—

🚗 For 2025–26, the cents per kilometre method is capped at 5,000 work-related kilometres per car.

The rate is 88 cents per kilometre, covering eligible car expenses within that calculation. Receipts for individual running costs are not required under this method, but records are still needed to show how the work-related kilometres were calculated.

For work-related travel above 5,000 kilometres, the cents per kilometre method does not extend beyond the cap.

That is where the logbook method may become relevant.
It uses the work-related percentage of actual car expenses and requires more detailed records, including a representative 12-week logbook.

The two methods use different calculations and record-keeping requirements, so the appropriate approach depends on the travel and records for the income year.

—

Your tax outcome is recalculated
from scratch every 12 months
based entirely on that year's unique variables.

👉 The ATO assesses your return by weighing three core levers: gross earnings, eligible deductions, and the exact tax withheld by your pay-as-you-go employers throughout the cycle.

Shifts in your salary band, side income, lifestyle changes, or a higher volume of deductions will inevitably pivot the final calculation.

💁🏻‍♀️ A larger refund isn't an automated win either; it frequently means the system held more of your money than required all year.

Look at your 2025-26 position on its own merits rather than measuring it against last season's numbers.
—
