If I knew what I know now, I would have done things differently. It's the line every parent eventually says, and it usually arrives right when their own kid is old enough to ignore it.

With a 15 year old who'd never even heard of super, the lesson started simple. For every $20 you earn, put a dollar away.

Then came the real teaching, how interest compounds, how money earns money, how a small sacrifice now shapes a much bigger future later.

It's not about giving up the lifestyle. It's about starting the habit before it feels necessary.

A tax move is available. June is ending. Most people act.

But availability is not the same as readiness. A contribution that misses the fund's cut-off does not count. A deduction without documentation does not hold.

The right decision made in the wrong order can still cost you.

Sequence is not a delay. It is what protects the outcome.

If you feel like you're doing everything right but still not progressing, the answer isn't to do more.

Stop. Reassess. Look at your budget, your expenses, and where they're actually leading you.

Have a goal in mind, then work backwards to build the structure that gets you there.

And watch your circle. Chasing what's outside your own objectives, the house, the car, the investment property someone else has, pulls you further from your own goals, not closer.

Nathan's pharmacy had a strong year. His accountant flagged a super contribution and a portfolio sale as worth considering before 30 June.

He acted. He just acted in the wrong order.

The cap was not confirmed. Business cash was tighter than it looked. The pressure came from a decision that did not need to be rushed.

Urgency is not the same as strategy.

You don't need an adviser to buy a property. Anyone can do that on their own.

What you actually need is someone who has watched co-buying structures play out for 17 years, and who thinks about everything that can go wrong rather than everything that can go right.

People don't connect with wins. They connect with the losses and lessons others have learnt before them, shared with the right care for privacy.

That's the difference between being sold to and actually being helped.

Do you know how your portfolio has shifted since January?

Not just what each account is worth, but how the whole structure sits together. Super, property, shares and cash can all drift when no one is watching the overall mix.

Start with three questions. Concentration. Super alignment. And what your cash is actually for.

Co-buying with a friend or family member can open doors that feel out of reach alone.

But most people skip the uncomfortable questions β€” because nobody wants to ask their bestie what happens if they lose their job, get married, or stop being friends.

Those conversations feel unnecessary right now. They become essential later.

Treat it like a business transaction from day one, work backwards from the end goal, and ask everything that could go wrong before you sign anything.

Portfolio drift does not announce itself.

One asset outperforms. Contributions continue. Property rises. The plan on paper quietly becomes something else in practice.

Is the portfolio you are holding still the one you intended to hold?

Most people spend more time planning their next holiday than planning for retirement.

The earlier you start, the more time your money has to work for you.

Even small, consistent contributions can add up significantly over the years.

Your future self will thank you for getting started today.
