👀 Check. If you get an urgent message saying it's from us, ask yourself if it's real. You can check our website to verify our payments and our contact details.

🛡️ Protect. Use a passkey to sign in to myGov and turn off your password as a sign in option.

Feel-good vibes AND a tax deduction? Yes please! 🙌

You can claim a tax deduction for donations to organisations that have a deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. But not all charities and organisations have this.

Here’s how to check if you can claim:

1. Search for and open the ABN Lookup tool
2. Type in the name of the organisation
3. Select the right organisation from the list (pro tip: if it’s not listed, you can’t claim a deduction)
4. Scroll down to the ‘Deductible gift recipient status’ heading.

✔️ If it shows a status – yes! You can claim
❌ If it says ‘Not entitled’ – no deal. You can’t claim a tax deduction.

You might be exempt from paying the 2% Medicare levy, but you need proof.

If you’re not eligible for Medicare and don’t get Medicare benefits, you need to apply for a Medicare Entitlement Statement (MES) from Services Australia.

You need the statement before you lodge your tax return.

⏰ It can take up to 8 WEEKS, so apply ASAP! No MES = No exemption.

To be eligible for a Medicare levy exemption, you and all your dependents, including your spouse, need to be exempt. This means your spouse may also need to apply for their own MES.

Look out for scams at tax time!

Scammers often send myGov and Services Australia scam text messages and emails. They pretend to be us so they can steal your personal information and money after you click a link or give them your details.

Scammers might say:
🚩 you can get a one-time payment, tax rebate or other type of refund
🚩 there’s a problem with your tax return or myGov account
🚩 there’s been a change to your myGov account or it has the wrong information
🚩 your myGov account is about to be frozen or suspended.

Remember, don’t click on the internet link!
