Good news if you use your car for work!

The ATO has increased the cents-per-kilometre rate to **91¢ per km for the 2026–27 financial year.**

But before you start claiming every trip to Bunnings...

✅ Only eligible work-related travel counts.
✅ A maximum of 5,000 business kilometres per car applies under this method.
✅ You still need records to support your claim.

Not sure what you can claim? Have a chat with the JTR team!

Tax advice is everywhere these days… but not all of it is worth listening to!

🍺 Gazza from down the pub has a few theories.
💸 Dazza reckons EVERYTHING is deductible.
🤖 Chazza the ChatGPT bot sounds pretty convincing.

But when it comes to your finances, we'd suggest choosing door number FOUR!

There's nothing wrong with asking questions, but good tax advice needs more than a confident answer. It needs someone who understands your circumstances and knows the rules.

Jenny and the JTR team have you covered!

Biggie had the right idea. 😂

“No need to worry, my accountant handles that.”

We need to talk about AI advice. 👀

A new client recently came to us after acting on financial planning information from ChatGPT or Claude.

Super contributions had been allocated incorrectly because AI simply didn’t have the full picture — their tax situation, circumstances or future plans.

Thankfully, the JTR team picked it up in time and it could be rectified.

But here’s the concerning part: we’re now seeing situations like this at least once a week.

Once upon a time, accountants were correcting advice heard at the pub or from a mate down the road. Now, we’re increasingly correcting advice from AI.

AI is a great tool for information and learning — but personalised tax and financial decisions need the full picture.

Use AI to ask questions. Use qualified professionals to make important financial decisions.

A new client comes to us for their 2026 tax return. 👀

They’ve been making additional contributions to their super fund and claiming them as a tax deduction in previous years.
The problem? They prepared their own tax returns, and no one told them they needed to submit a form to their super fund in order to claim the contributions as a tax deduction.

Long story short, the ATO will data match at some point, and the mistake could cost them roughly $3,200 per year in additional tax.

This is what can happen when you prepare your own tax return. You don’t know what you don’t know!

Sometimes a seemingly small oversight can become a very costly mistake.

💔 The ATO is breaking up with your credit card.
But for some businesses, this is more than just a breakup…
If you've been using your credit card to pay quarterly tax obligations and then spreading the repayments, you'll need a new cash-flow plan.
30 November 2026 — don't wait until your next tax bill to work it out.

It’s here! From 1 October, card surcharges for Visa, Mastercard, eftpos and American Express payments are out.

If your business has been adding a card surcharge, make sure your payment systems, pricing and customer information are updated.

And remember — while the surcharge might be gone, the cost of accepting card payments hasn't magically disappeared. Businesses can factor those costs into their overall pricing.

We covered the numbers in our previous post, so have a scroll back if you missed it.
