Ever wonder exactly where your superannuation is being invested? For a lot of business owners, standard super funds feel like a bit of a black box. You put the money in, but you don't really get a say in how it works.

That is why a Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF) is often a better option for some people. Regulated by the ATO, it gives you the ultimate control to decide exactly where your money goes, whether thatโ€™s commercial property, shares, or term deposits.

Plus, there are huge tax benefits. If your fund stays compliant, the maximum tax rate on your investment income is just 15 percent.

Of course, the rules are strict, which is why having a professional administrator in your corner matters. We handle the ongoing compliance and legal paperwork, so you get all the control over your wealth without any of the administrative headaches.

If you wait until the end of the week or the end of the month to send out your invoices, you are making it unnecessarily hard on your own cash flow.

The golden rule for business right now is simple: the moment the job is done, the invoice is sent. Every day you delay sending the bill is an extra day you have to wait to get paid, which puts pressure on your ability to pay your own staff and suppliers.

Three simple steps to get paid faster:

Don't batch them up. Use your accounting app to send the invoice before you even leave the site or officially close the project.

If you are still giving people 30 days to pay, it might be time to update your terms to 7 or 14 days.

Stop wasting your evenings writing awkward "just checking in on this payment" emails. Modern software can send automatic, polite reminders the exact day an invoice becomes overdue.

A tight invoicing system keeps the money moving and takes the friction out of getting paid.

Well, weโ€™ve officially hit the pointy end of the financial year! Around mid-June, we always see the exact same thing happen: a massive rush to get tax returns lodged ASAP in hopes of a quick refund. And look, seeing a healthy return hit your bank account is a great feeling. But honestly? Our absolute HTML-biggest priority is making sure you don't get hit with a nasty, unexpected tax bill.

There are only a couple of weeks left before the 2026 books close for good. Once the calendar flips to July, we can't change the pastโ€”we can only report on it.

If you want to get ahead of the game, the best place to start right now is rounding up your records. Take some time this week to hunt down those missing receipts, chase up outstanding invoices, and get your accounts fully reconciled.

It is also a good idea to pause before you purchase. If you are thinking of buying new equipment or vehicles just for the sake of a quick tax deduction, letโ€™s chat first to make sure it actually makes commercial sense for your cash flow.

Finally, remember to double-check your super. You need to ensure all employee and personal super contributions are processed and entirely cleared by your superfund before the June 30 deadline hits, otherwise you miss out on claiming them this year.

Running a successful business is demanding enough without having to teach yourself advanced financial forecasting at 10 PM on a Thursday.

When you first start out, you have to wear every hat. But as your business grows, holding onto the "numbers" actually slows you down. If you are spending your time stressing over cash flow projections instead of closing new deals or improving your services, you are holding your own business back.

How an IAG Virtual CFO gives you your time back:

1๏ธโƒฃ Strategic Oversight: We don't just record what happened; we build out the roadmap for what happens next.

2๏ธโƒฃ Executive Support: You get the expertise of a high-level financial director, without the massive full-time salary.

3๏ธโƒฃ Total Confidence: You can make big decisions, like hiring staff or buying equipment, knowing exactly how it impacts your bottom line.

Itโ€™s time to stop working in the financial weeds and start leading your business again. Let us handle the numbers so you can focus on the growth.

On Monday, we talked about how buying a local business is a fantastic way to grow your customer base overnight. But what happens after the ink dries?

Buying a business isn't just about taking over their bank accounts; you are taking over their systems, their staff, and their reputation.

Here are the three biggest traps we see buyers fall into:

Realising the business you just bought still uses paper files and doesn't want to learn your software.

Discovering that the "loyal customers" were only loyal to the previous owner, and they are already leaving.

Changing the branding to match yours, only to realise you just wiped out 10 years of local goodwill.

Buying a business can be incredibly rewarding, but you need to look under the hood before you buy the car. If you are thinking about an acquisition, make sure you know exactly what you are inheriting.

When you want to grow your business, the default plan is usually to spend more on marketing to find new customers. But what if you just bought a business that already has them?

People often think "acquisitions" are just for big corporate buyouts on the news. In reality, itโ€™s a brilliant strategy for local businesses to level up quickly.

Here is why buying a business can be a smart move:

You skip the cold-calling phase and inherit a database of people already buying what you sell.

If you buy a business that does something slightly different to you, you can instantly offer new services to your existing clients.

Buying a local competitor is a very fast way to secure your spot in the market.

It is a powerful way to grow, but you have to know exactly what you are buying. Make sure you always chat with your accountant before making a move to ensure the numbers actually stack up!

Did your last tax bill make your jaw drop?

If you are finding out what you owe the ATO at the absolute last minute, it might be time to review who is looking after your numbers. A surprise bill usually means your accountant is only looking backward, rather than helping you plan ahead. You can't change the past, but you can certainly stop paying for it.

Alan and the team at IAG are currently offering a "Second Opinion" review. We will sit down with you, take a detailed look at your last tax return, and show you exactly what a proactive approach could have saved you. It's about finding the deductions you were entitled to and putting systems in place so you never get caught out by a surprise bill again.

We have all been there. A client sends an email complaining about something that is clearly outlined in their contract, and your first instinct is to type out a very direct reply proving exactly why they are wrong.

Before you hit send, it is worth asking: what is the actual cost of winning this argument?

While the customer definitely isn't always right, pointing that out usually just leads to an exhausting, defensive back-and-forth. It ruins the relationship and wastes time you could be spending on growing your business.

The trick is to stop fighting over who is at fault and start focusing on the fix. If your business has solid, clear documentation and invoicing in place, you don't need to argue. You can simply point to the facts, offer a professional solution, and move on. It keeps the peace, protects your reputation, and gets you back to work much faster.

With July 1 just around the corner, the "big switch" to Payday Super is almost here! We know there has been a lot of talk about this, so we wanted to simplify what it actually means for your business.

Basically, the old way of paying super every three months is gone. From July 1, you will need to pay super every single time you pay your staff. If you pay wages weekly, you pay super weekly. It is a big change for your bank balance, and we want to make sure you aren't caught off guard by the new weekly or fortnightly outgoing.

Two things you need to do right now:

1๏ธโƒฃ Download your data: If you use the ATOโ€™s free clearing house, it is closing for good on June 30. You won't be able to log back in to see your records after that, so grab your history now.

2๏ธโƒฃ Check your timing: Super must land in the employee's fund within 7 days of payday. Don't wait until the last minute, because a "late" payment starts attracting interest and fees immediately.

We are here to help you get your systems sorted so July 1 is a "non-event" for your business. Give Alan and the team a call at (08) 6363 7888 to talk about your transition plan!

Following up on our post about the hurdles family businesses face, we need to talk about the alternative to just "hoping the kids take over."

A lot of business owners think succession planning is something you do in your final year of work. The truth is, if you want to get paid what your business is actually worth, you need to start preparing years in advance.

Whether you plan to sell to a competitor, hand it to your staff, or pass it down the family line, the goal is exactly the same: you need to make yourself redundant. If the business relies on you knowing all the clients and making every final call, itโ€™s going to be very hard to sell in the current economy. Buyers want to buy a well-oiled machine, not a high-stress job.

Over the next few years, your focus should be on building systems that run without you and getting your financial records spotless.

Alan and the team at IAG specialise in helping owners build this exact roadmap. We help you move from being the centre of the business to being a true shareholder, so you can exit on your own terms when the time is right.
