I am a volunteer Treasurer with United Nations Association of Western Australia and an advocate of uplifting Financial Literacy in our communities to enable them to have a better control over their financial future. My quest for uplifting my own financial literacy and economic empowerment began in my humble upbringing in Nairobi, Kenya. Pursuit of an equitable and liberated future for myself and my children, led me to make a commitment to myself to self teach myself the Chartered Management Accountant's course from UK (CIMA UK) on a correspondence basis. After 6 years of completing the rigorous course, I had an opportunity to migrate to Australia in 2007, a beautiful country that we now call our home. Shortly after arriving to Australia, I obtained my CPA designation and worked with listed businesses as an Accountant in various capacities. In 2014, I side stepped and pursued a career in financial planning as my acquired skills and experience complimented my passion and purpose for wanting to empower people financially so that they can live their best fulfilled lives. I must say, I wake up with a spring in my step daily, as I get to create a conscious positive impact, one life at a time!

Great conversation with Fiona May and Sandra Lee from Women on Transition regarding Top Financial Mistakes Women Make After Divorce and Separation.

In this podcast conversation, we talk about: -
✅Importance of getting clarity on your cashflow requirements pre- and post-divorce. Generally, a woman's life expectancy is around 85 years, so if you retire at 65, you potentially have 20 years of cashflow needs that need to be considered. Completing financial projections which factor in your current and future financial needs becomes critical.
✅Work towards uplifting your financial literacy. Understanding various investment options, diversification and compounding impact, all aid towards sustainable approach to wealth creation.
✅As women are living longer, planning for future care costs is important so when that time comes, you are financially prepared to navigate that phase of life.
✅Considerations of whether to retain or sell family home as part of the property settlement.

One of the Financial Advice areas I am Purpose driven about is enhancing Women’s Economic Empowerment.

Statistically, post Divorce and Separation it takes a woman, minimum 7-8 years to recover financially. Primarily as generally women tend to be the primary carers pre and post divorce and separation which results in a long term financial detriment.

Women are also living longer with average life span of around 85 years. With average retirement Age of 65, women generally have to create sources of income to support their retirement income needs for 20 years post retirement! This is why seeking robust and trusted financial advice is critical to create a renewed financial trajectory to help you navigate the journey as seamlessly as possible.

I am looking forward to participating at the below event which is a great opportunity to reset for navigating life post divorce and separation.

The WHY....When client walks away with Peace in her Heart.

Yesterday, I completed a joint meeting with Estate and Succession Lawyer and my client to assist in designing a strategic Succession plan alongside wealth management strategies.

Julie is 68 and Matt is 78. Unfortunately, Matt has been struggling with dementia and Julie is equally trying to manage her ongoing health issues. The struggle was evident in her eyes.

When I initially met Julie in Dec 24, we identified below concerns: -
🛑 Both clients were in an SMSF, Accumulation phase. Combined cash balance of $123,000 and parcel of shares of $23,000.
🛑Family Trust - Primary asset is a commercial property they have owned since 1980s', now worth $6M with debt of $1.2M. Cash buildup of $400,000 with no strategic investment strategy in place. Average rental yield is 97%! It's a cash cow and an asset they intend to retain as an intergenerational asset.
🛑 Wills and PoA's were set up in 2015, requires a review.
🛑 Family Trust Deed requires a review as Julie is currently the Sole Director and is struggling to manage the family trust on her own.

Some of the solutions considered to address above concerns:
✅ Move the SMSF into Pension phase, sell down non-performing parcel of shares, roll the funds out of SMSF into a cost-effective retail fund, set up Pension for Julie and wind up the SMSF by 30 June 2025. 🌟Win - Simplification and one less structure for Julie to deal with.
✅ Consider alternate options to house and invest the cash build up in the family trust from a taxable to a tax-free structure. 🌟Win - Opportunity to strategically invest the cash reserves.
✅ Upon review of existing Wills and discussing multiple options adding a codicil to existing Wills may better meet client's succession objectives. 🌟Win - Julie saves costs and does not have to re-do her Will.
✅ Consider adding both the adult children as Directors and Beneficiaries of the family trust. 🌟Win - Close knit family and adult children can continue to manage the intergenerational asset. Gives Julie more time to focus on her and Matt's wellbeing. Optimal also from profit distributions perspective and eventually we will consider setting up a bucket company once the distributions hit a certain tax threshold.

🌟 🌟 🌟 Ultimate Win - Upon completion of the meeting Julie, walked away with Peace in her heart; sigh of relief that she can now focus on her and Matt's wellbeing. Both adult children have been equally engaged in the process which makes it a smooth transition of assets when the time comes.
