⏳ Don't Leave It Until the Last Minute

Tax time has a habit of sneaking up on people.

When a tax return is rushed, it's easier to overlook income, miss deductions, or lodge before all information is available.

A little preparation can go a long way.

✅ Get organised early

✅ Review your information carefully

✅ Make sure all income and deductions have been considered

Giving yourself enough time can help avoid unnecessary stress and reduce the risk of mistakes.

🏡 Working From Home Deductions

If you've been working from home, it's worth taking the time to review your options before lodging your tax return.

Different claim methods can produce different results, depending on your circumstances and the records you've kept throughout the year.

One mistake I often see is people assuming the simplest method is automatically the best option. That's not always the case.

Before lodging, consider:

✅ Comparing the available methods

✅ Reviewing your records

✅ Choosing the approach that best suits your situation

💰 It's Not About the Refund

One of the biggest misconceptions I see at tax time is that a larger refund means you've had a better result.

In reality, a tax return is a reconciliation between the tax you've paid throughout the year and the amount you were actually required to pay.

A refund simply means more tax was withheld than necessary. A smaller refund doesn't automatically mean something has gone wrong, just as a larger refund doesn't necessarily mean you've achieved a better outcome.

What matters most is that all income has been included, all eligible deductions have been correctly claimed, and your tax return accurately reflects your circumstances.

The goal isn't the biggest refund – it's getting your tax return right.

💰 Don't Forget These Income Sources

When preparing your tax return, it's important to remember that income isn't limited to your main job.

Commonly overlooked income can include:

✅ Side hustles and freelance work

✅ Investment income and bank interest

✅ Government payments

Even small or irregular amounts may need to be reported.

A lot of this information is reported directly to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), so it's important to ensure everything is included before lodging.

⚠️ Common Tax Time Mistakes the ATO Reviews

Every year, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) focuses on areas where mistakes are most commonly made.

Some of the key areas include:

✅ Work-related expenses

✅ Motor vehicle claims

✅ Rental property deductions

✅ Missing or incorrectly reported income

Most errors aren't intentional, but they can lead to amendments, reviews and unnecessary stress.

Taking a little extra time to review your records before lodging can make a big difference.

⏳ Why Lodging Too Early Can Cause Problems

One of the most common tax time mistakes I see is people rushing to lodge before all of their information has been reported.

While prefill information is helpful, it isn't always complete early in the tax season.

Employers generally have until 14 July to finalise income reporting, and information from banks, health funds and government agencies can take longer to appear.

Lodging too early may mean:

✔ Missing income

✔ Missing private health details

✔ An amendment later

A little patience can save a lot of extra work.

📋 Keep Good Records, Protect Your Tax Deductions

One of the most common issues I see at tax time is people trying to claim expenses without having the records to support them.

Depending on the deduction, this might include:

✅ Receipts and invoices
✅ Vehicle logbooks and travel records
✅ Working from home records
✅ Bank statements and diary records

Good record keeping not only makes tax time easier, it can also help avoid problems if the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) reviews your claims.
