Big change coming to how Australians pay at the checkout 💳

From 1 October 2026, businesses can no longer add a surcharge for paying by card - Eftpos, Visa, Mastercard and Amex included. It’s part of RBA reforms designed to make pricing simpler and more transparent for everyone.

⏰ Reminder for trade clients: TPAR is due tomorrow, 28 August.
If your business pays contractors and you’re in building & construction, cleaning, courier or road freight, IT services, or security - the ATO wants a summary of what you paid them this year. That’s all a Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR) is. It’s not a tax bill.

Made a profit this year? Congrats. Now check your bank balance...
Profit and cash are not the same thing, and that gap catches so many small business owners off guard.
Profit is what’s left on paper after sales minus expenses. Cash in the bank is what’s actually there to spend.
The gap usually hides in a few places: tax you’ve set aside, loan repayments, stock or materials sitting on the shelf, and invoices your customers haven’t paid yet.
Knowing the difference means you stop panicking over a healthy P&L next to a low bank balance, and start planning around it instead.
