“My accountant says we made a profit… so where’s the money?”

It’s a question plenty of business owners ask.

Profit and cash in the bank aren’t the same thing.

Your cash might be tied up in stock or unpaid invoices. You may have purchased equipment, repaid loans, paid tax, taken drawings or simply had the timing of money coming in and going out work against you.

That’s why looking at your bank balance alone doesn’t tell you how well your business is performing.

Understanding where your cash is actually going is one of the most useful things you can do as a business owner.

Don’t leave it until the last minute.

Getting organised early gives you time to make sure your accounts are up to date, deal with any issues and importantly, understand what the numbers are actually telling you.

While you’re looking at them, ask yourself:
• Are our jobs producing the margins we expected?
• Is cash flow tighter than it should be?
• Are rising costs being reflected in our pricing?
• Is all this turnover actually producing enough profit?

Is your business profitable… or just busy?

It’s easy to look at a full calendar, growing sales and plenty of work coming in and assume the business is doing well.

But more work doesn’t always mean more profit.

A few questions worth asking:

👉 Are your margins improving or shrinking?
👉 Is cash building up or constantly tight?
👉 Are overheads growing faster than revenue?
👉 Is the extra workload actually producing extra profit?

Sometimes stepping back from the day-to-day and looking at the numbers tells a very different story.

Being busy is great. Being busy AND profitable is better. 😊

“What do you think my business is worth?”

It's a question I get asked surprisingly often.

And usually my answer starts with: “It depends.”
Two businesses with similar revenue can have very different values.

Profitability matters, of course. But so do things like:
• how dependent the business is on the owner
• recurring versus one-off revenue
• customer concentration
• systems and processes
• the strength of the team
• industry and market conditions
• risk
• future maintainable earnings

This is also why I think it's useful for business owners to understand value before they're ready to sell.

Knowing what drives the value of your business gives you time to work on it. And often, the things that make a business more valuable also make it a much better business to own.
