A common misconception: the poverty line isn’t about being out of work or without a home.

It means that after you’ve paid rent or the mortgage, you have less than half what comparable households have left to spend. In WA, a family with a child in poverty is around $224 a week short of that benchmark — the largest gap in the country.

That’s where the impossible decisions start: food, rent, or the kids’ school costs.

15% of Western Australians are now living in poverty, including 99,000 children — in the most prosperous state in the country. Most of it comes back to housing.

Workers are earning more. They’re just not getting to keep much of it.

Since the end of 2022, a typical household gained about $109 a month in real take-home income—while the typical worker’s debt payments climbed $57.

That means more than half of every new dollar went to debt before workers could spend it on anything else. In two-income households, rising debt payments can erase the entire gain.

The Century Foundation and Protect Borrowers have a new report showing debt payments growing more than 8x faster than household income gains.

If you’re wondering why rising wages haven’t translated into feeling more economically secure, start here.

Migrants overwhelmingly rent when they arrive. So cutting migration reduces demand for rentals, and all else equal rents should fall.

House prices are a harder call — they're driven by interest rates, the recent capital gains tax and negative gearing changes, and supply. Migration is one input among several.

Are you seeing any movement in rents where you are?

Migration grows the economy — more workers, more consumers, higher headline GDP.

But GDP per capita is the number that tells you whether people are actually better off. In Australia it's fallen in 10 of the last 16 quarters.

Which number do you think politicians should be quoting?

Migration grows the economy. It doesn't necessarily make Australians richer — GDP per capita has fallen in 10 of the last 16 quarters.

Households are being hit three ways, not two. Higher fuel. Higher mortgage repayments. And the cost of everything else, which is about 25% above where it sat five years ago.

That last one is the part people underestimate. Inflation coming down doesn't mean prices come back down — it means they stop rising as fast. The 25% is permanent.

Which of the three is hurting most in your household?

29/09/2026

The RBA named three things behind this month's rate rise. Two were predictable. One wasn't.

Middle East instability pushing up fuel costs. Capacity constraints at home. And the global AI boom, which is soaking up both capital and skilled workers.

That last one doesn't usually make it into a conversation about Perth mortgages.

Which of the three do you think matters most?

29/09/2026

Four rate rises this year. On the average Perth owner-occupier loan of $730,000, that's about $450 a month more than you were paying in January.

Not the kind of increase most budgets absorb quietly.

Have you run the numbers on yours yet?
