Rental income must be included in your annual taxable income, but so should the expenses that come with owning the property.

Many rental property expenses can be claimed as tax deductions, including interest, depreciation, insurance, council rates, repairs, maintenance, and property management fees.

Generally, capital expenses are the main costs that canโ€™t be immediately claimed as a deduction.

One missed super payment on one employee earning $80K costs you over $900 once the SGC kicks in. Multiply that across 8 or 10 staff, and one bad fortnight gets expensive fast.

The ATO doesn't need to audit you anymore. STP means they see every pay run in real time.

On 1 July 2026, quarterly super payments end. Most small business owners don't realise they've been using that super float to keep their cash flow running.

When it disappears, a lot of businesses are going to feel it.

One of the biggest advantages of an SMSF is the level of control it gives you over your super and investment decisions.

As long as your investments meet the sole purpose test and align with your strategy, you have far more flexibility in how your super is invested.

There can also be tax advantages, with most contributions taxed at 15% and tax free withdrawals generally available from age 60.

Unlike retail and industry super funds, an SMSF gives you direct control over how and where your super is invested.

But with that control comes responsibility, because members are legally responsible for managing the fund and meeting superannuation rules.

For many Australians, the flexibility and broader investment options are what make SMSFs so appealing.

If you make a profit when selling an investment property, the ATO considers it a capital gain and it must be declared on your tax return.

But in some cases, you may be exempt from paying CGT โ€” particularly if the property is your main residence.

Generally, your home may be exempt if you genuinely live there, keep your belongings there, and use it as your primary address for mail, utilities, and the electoral roll.

Fuel tax credit rates change twice a year, usually around February and August, so keeping accurate records matters.

If you claim less than $10,000 each year, the ATO does allow simplified methods for recording fuel usage and calculating your claim.

That includes methods for diesel heavy vehicles, BAS rate changes, and estimating fuel quantities based on average fuel prices.

21/05/2026

To claim fuel tax credits, your business must be registered for GST when purchasing fuel and registered for fuel tax credits when lodging your claim.

Businesses using fuel in machinery, heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes, or vehicles operating off public roads may be eligible.

Once registered through business.gov.au, you can claim the credit through your BAS.

Most crypto holders don't realise how many actions trigger a CGT event.

Selling, gifting, swapping to another crypto, or even buying a coffee with it โ€” all of it counts as a disposal in the ATO's eyes.

But here's what works in your favour.

Hold your crypto for more than a year before selling and you could be entitled to a 50% capital gains tax discount.

Timing your disposal isn't just strategy โ€” it's tax savings.
