Please find attached a summary table outlining the proposed Capital Gains Tax (CGT) treatment for various categories of assets based on acquisition and disposal dates.

The table provides a general overview of:
🔑 Pre-CGT assets acquired prior to 20 September 1985
🔑 Existing CGT assets acquired after 20 September 1985
🔑 The potential application of the 50% CGT discount
🔑 The proposed transition to an indexed cost base method from 1 July 2027

Dear Clients,
Many of us are feeling a degree of uncertainty following last week’s Federal Budget announcements. These proposed changes represent some of the most significant reforms to the Australian tax system in more than 25 years. However, at this stage, there is still a considerable lack of detail required to make informed decisions about your individual circumstances.

We are currently working through the announcements carefully so that we can provide you with information that is both accurate and relevant. Our priority is to identify areas where immediate decisions may be required, while other matters that do not require urgent action may take a little longer for us to analyze and communicate properly.

Importantly, Budget announcements are not law until legislation has been drafted, passed through both houses of Parliament and signed off by the Governor-General. This process may take some time, particularly given the level of detail still required around many of the proposed measures.

It is also worth noting that the Federal Opposition has indicated it may repeal some or all of these proposed measures should there be a change of government.

For this reason, we strongly encourage clients not to rush into making significant or costly financial changes until there is greater certainty around the final legislation and its practical application.

Attached below is a summary of the proposed changes to negative gearing, which may assist clients currently considering the purchase of assets they intended to negatively gear.

This picture of two black Labrador dogs and their handlers was taken during 1967. The tracker dogs took part in Operation Lismore with 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. Pictured are Private (later Lance Corporal) Thomas Douglas Blackhurst of Swansea, NSW, with his dog Justin, and Lance Corporal Norman Leslie Cameron of Kingston, South Australia, with Cassius. The dogs were responsible for locating Vietcong fighters and some enemy installations. Lance Corporal Blackhurst was killed in action on April 17, 1971 while serving with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam.
