Is your business ready for the new financial year? 📊

If you started your business because you love what you do (not because you love crunching numbers), this one's for you.

Budgeting, forecasting, and setting goals might sound like a lot, but together, they give you a clear picture of where your business is, where it's heading, and how to get there without the stress.

In our latest blog post, we cover how:
📌 A budget keeps your spending in check
🔮 Forecasting means fewer cash flow curveballs
🎯 Goals give your financial decisions a direction

Whether you're a start-up or have been around a while but feel a little behind, now is a great time to put a plan in place.

We’ve welcomed a new friendly face to The BookSitters crew…

✨ Say hello to Liz Lang

Liz joined us recently and has already become one of the steady hands helping our team and clients behind the scenes. With experience at Coles and 10 years as a manager at McDonald’s, she’s used to fast‑paced days, lots of moving parts and keeping her cool when things get busy.

Armed with a Cert IV in Bookkeeping and Cert III in Retail, Liz supports the day‑to‑day running of the business and is our go‑to for calm, “we’ve got this” energy.

When she’s not at work, you’ll often find her camping, reading, spending time with family or volunteering with the Berrima RFS. She’s especially proud to have served during the 2019–2020 Black Summer bushfires, a true reflection of her commitment to her community.

👋 Join us in welcoming Liz to The BookSitters!

When did you last check your ATO communication preferences?

You'll want to make sure you're set up to receive digital communications so you don't miss anything important when Payday Super kicks in! 🙌

Here's all you need to do:
☑️Head to ATO Online Services
☑️Click the 'Communication Preferences' tab
☑️Select 'Employer and Business Obligations' as your communication type

You can also authorise your tax or BAS agent to receive digital communications on your behalf if that works better for you!

There’s something pretty special about building relationships that stand the test of time. ✨

We’re incredibly grateful for Adrian’s kind words and continued support over the years. To have earned the trust of someone so respected in the accounting industry means the world to our team.

At The BookSitters, we’ve always believed that great bookkeeping is about more than numbers on a screen. It’s about communication, care, attention to detail, and helping clients move forward with confidence.

Thank you, Adrian Raftery, for your ongoing referrals, trust, and encouragement over the years. We truly value the relationship and are proud to support so many businesses together. 🤝

Next up (and wrapping up) our “Meet the Team” series… say hello to Lulu 🐾

Lulu is Justine’s four‑legged right‑hand girl and our unofficial Head of Morale. While she may not lodge BAS or reconcile accounts, she does take her role in office supervision very seriously, specialising in nap scheduling, snack detection, and ensuring no one works too hard without a break.

When she’s not “helping” Justine at her desk, you’ll find Lulu perfecting her sunbathing technique, going on adventures in the garden, or keeping a close eye on any snacks within a 5km radius.

We’re pretty sure she thinks she runs the place… and honestly, we’re not convinced she doesn’t.

Most small businesses plan for profit.
The ones that last? They plan for uncertainty. 🌿

Here are 5 ways to build financial resilience — not just revenue:

1️⃣ Review your cash flow weekly, not quarterly
2️⃣ Build a 90-day reserve in a separate account
3️⃣ Know your fixed vs. variable costs cold
4️⃣ Diversify your revenue before you have to
5️⃣ Partner with a financial expert and turn your numbers into a growth plan

Resilience isn't a number; it's a habit.

💬 Which of these is your biggest gap right now? Drop it in the comments.

Scam calls claiming to be from the ATO are getting more convincing, which is why this new app feature is worth knowing about.

The ATO’s Verify Call feature lets you check in real time whether a caller is genuinely from the ATO, so you can avoid sharing information with a scammer.

It’s simple: make sure the ATO app is set up on your phone, use Verify Call if you receive a call, and if no confirmation appears within 30 seconds, hang up.

If you’re not sure what’s real and what’s noise, let The BookSitters be your first call for practical bookkeeping and compliance support.

Continuing our “Meet the Team” series with one of the first friendly faces many clients speak to… 💛

Meet Kylie – part of our Bookkeeping Support & Customer Service team in the Southern Highlands. She’s warm, organised and focused on making sure clients feel heard, supported and looked after as we work through their day‑to‑day bookkeeping together.

Kylie loves being part of a collaborative team that’s genuinely invested in helping businesses feel more confident with their numbers. We’re very happy she’s part of The BookSitters crew.

Australia’s minimum wage is rising again from 1 July, and employers should review their payroll settings now to stay ahead of the change.

From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage will be:
💰$26.44 per hour (up from $24.95)
💰$1,004.90 per week for a full‑time 38 hour week
💰Most minimum award rates will also rise by 4.75 per cent.

If you pay people close to award or minimum rates, this is a good time to:
☑️Identify which roles and team members are affected
☑️Check your payroll settings reflect the new rates from the correct date
☑️Review how the change flows through to your costs, margins and pricing

Taking a little time now to work through these points can make the transition on 1 July smoother and give you more confidence in the numbers you are using to make decisions for the year ahead.

From 1 July 2026, every time you run payroll, you’ll be paying super too.

For employees, that’s a win. For business owners, it just means things will look a bit different behind the scenes. If you’ve heard the words Payday Super floating around, this is your gentle nudge to tune in.

In our new blog, we break down what Payday Super is, how it shifts your usual super payment timing, and what that might mean for your cash flow and payroll routines.

Make yourself a cuppa, take five minutes to read it through, and give yourself one less thing to stress about as July gets closer.
